BCB’s youth leagues get jump on seniors

Tokio Millennium Re Hiscox Re, Bank of Bermuda Foundation and BF&M are again sponsoring the Bermuda Cricket Board’s youth leagues, which have already started the 2014 season.

Tokio Millennium Re under-eights started their season on April 12 while the Hiscox under-11s began fixtures in the East and West zones on April 16, and the under-14s, sponsored by Bank of Bermuda Foundation, on April 26.

There is also the BF&M Player Development League for under-17s, who play a 40-overs competition on Saturday afternoons. Their All-Star match will take place on July 25 with a Twenty20 match at Somerset Cricket Club.

The under-eights play every Saturday morning at the National Sports Centre at 9.30, while the under-11s play Wednesday or Friday evenings, with the All-Stars match set for June 28.

The under-14s play 35-over matches every Saturday morning, with their All-Star match on June 28.

“The BCB Youth Leagues are designed to accommodate a mix of teams from both local clubs and schools,” Lloyd Fray, the BCB president, said. “The main purpose of our leagues is to teach the skills of cricket while enriching the lives of all of Bermuda’s children.

“The leagues provide an opportunity to interact with each other in a safe and fun environment that embraces equality, team spirit and togetherness. I would like to thank all four of our Youth League sponsors, whose support provides our youth with a clear pathway to progress from the age of 5 through to the senior level.”

The BCB will be hosting trials for the under-15 national team at Berkeley Institute tomorrow.

Children born on or after September 1, 1998, are invited to attend the trials from 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

An evening league game is scheduled for Monday at 5.30pm at Shelly Bay Field. Players are asked to be at the venue for 5pm.

The final squad will be announced in the coming weeks. Once the squad is announced there will be a meeting for all selected players and their parents.

Parents are asked to complete the under-15 registration form and return to the governing bodies office or to Herman Eve, the team

manager, at training tomorrow.

Under-13 trials for players born on or after September 1, 2000, will be scheduled shortly.
