Bermuda quartet selected for tour
Four of Bermuda’s young cricketers have been selected for a Canada team that will tour Sri Lanka in March.
Sheldon Caesar, Cameron Jeffers, Antoine Seaman, and Chare Smith will join eight players from the Ontario Cricket Academy and Club for the trip.
The team will be coached by Derek Perera, the former Canada player, with Abraash Khan, a member of the Canada Under-19 side, captaining the team. Khan, a top-order batsman and fast bowler, has recently returned from a stint at the National Cricket Academy in Pakistan.
The Bermuda quartet, all of whom are members of the Bermuda Under-19 training squad, have been chosen by the Bermuda Cricket Board based on their potential, hard work over the past year, and the need for all four to gain international experience.
The BCB is expected to make an official announcement on the trip once the four players have signed and returned their contracts.
With the regional Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers coming up later this year, the BCB believes it is vitally important that as many players as possible are exposed to higher levels of cricket.
Officials also hope that mixing with different players will improve the Bermuda quartet’s understanding of the game.
Russell Richardson, the Bermuda Under-19 manager, will travel with the squad as an assistant manager.
The Canada contingent is made up of players who are seen as potential national squad members, and the games that the team are scheduled to play reflect that focus on high performance.
St Joseph’s College, where Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lanka captain, was educated and St Peter’s College, where his team-mate Angelo Perera went to school provide two of the opponents, while there will also be games against a South Province XI and Central Province XI.
Derek Perera said that the inclusion of the Bermuda players gave a tour, he expected to be a challenging one against tough opposition, a “new and exciting feel”.
The OCA&C last toured Sri Lanka in 2011, when they won three games and lost six against opposition that included a host of Sri Lanka Under-19 players. The tour runs from March 11 to 23.
