Scotland shines with the bat for Surrey

Showing promise: Bermuda youngster Scotland is impressing for Surrey

Another Bermudian youngster looks to be following in the footsteps of the island’s top player Delray Rawlins ... not at Sussex but at Surrey further north in South London.

Marcus Scotland helped the Surrey Under-14 County Age Group beat the Sussex County Age Group by six wickets in a 50-over match on Thursday after sharing an opening partnership of 99 with George Roberts at Trinity Mid-Whitgiftians Cricket Club in Surrey.

Chasing 170, Surrey replied with 172 for four in 33.3 overs. Scotland and Roberts laid the foundations in their opening stand that lasted 76 minutes before Scotland was run out for 39 after facing 64 balls and hitting four fours. Scotland and Roberts batted together for 21.2 overs, with Roberts scoring 56 off 86 balls before he was second out on 122. Surrey lost two more wickets on 133 and 143 before Ayush Patel led them home with 29 not out.

Scotland, who turned 14 in January, is the son of former cricketer Cleon Scotland and the grandson of Rupert Scotland. He has been living in England with his family the past few years. On Tuesday, Scotland scored 100 not out in a Surrey warm-up game ahead of their ECB Under-14 Cup opener against Sussex.

Scotland, playing for Jupiter, helped his team recover from 41 for five before posting 206 for nine in their 50 overs.

Scotland and Tom Whiteley (59) added 116 for the sixth wicket in carrying the score to 157.

Scotland batted for 186 minutes, faced 141 balls. Mars replied with 194 all out in 46.1 overs. The match featured all the best under-14 players in Surrey.

The Bermuda Cricket Board are keeping tabs on Scotland’s progress as he is under consideration for selection for the ICC Americas Under-18 tournament qualifier in Toronto in July.

Last Summer, Scotland was in the Bermuda Under-17 team for the ICC Americas Triangular Tournament in Houston, Texas, before turning out for the Bermuda Under-14 Development squad which toured England the following month.

n Local umpire Emmerson Carrington has been chosen by the ICC to officiate in the regional World Cup qualifier in Toronto from July 15 to 25.

The tournament features three countries — Canada, Bermuda and the United States — in a double round-robin format with the winners advancing to the 2018 World Cup in New Zealand from January 12 to February 4. Lloyd Fray, the BCB president, praised Carrington on his appointment.

“The BCB is continually looking for international experiences to support our local officials and advocating for their inclusion so we are excited that Emmerson has been given another opportunity,” he said. “I have no doubt that Emmerson will continue to enhance that reputation.”

“Bermuda has a strong history of producing quality international umpires who have proven themselves on the international stage consistently,” Fray said.

“The BCB is continually looking for international experiences to support our local officials and advocating for their inclusion so we are excited that Emmerson has been given another opportunity. I have no doubt that Emmerson will continue to enhance that reputation.

“This follows his selection earlier this year to the ICC regional World Cricket League qualifier between Cayman Islands and Argentina. I congratulate him and the Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association on this appointment and trust that not only will Emmerson grow from the experience but the opportunity will aspire others to follow in his footsteps.”
