Leverock steers leaders Flatts to eight-wicket win

In form: Flatts batsman Leverock

Kamau Leverock warmed up for his Cup Match return with a fine all-round display to steer leaders Flatts to an eight-wicket victory over nearest rivals PHC in this top-of-the-table clash at PHC Field yesterday.

Leverock, who has been recalled to Somerset’s team this year, hammered a 28-ball fifty and took two wickets as the visiting side had things all their own way.

Flatts were 35 for two chasing PHC’s 96 all out before Leverock and Kijuan Franks, the Flatts captain, came together at the crease and produced an unbroken 64-run third-wicket stand that carried the visiting side across the line.

Left-handed batsman Leverock, who plays in Britain with Cardiff MCC University, led the run chase with 50 that included seven boundaries and a six, while Franks hit one six and four boundaries in a knock of 35 from 44 balls.

Darren Anglin, the PHC seam bowler, took two wickets for 28 runs to lead the home side attack. Earlier, Flatts’ decision to send PHC to bat paid off as the home side crumbled in just 37.3 overs with opener Jelani Albouy (20), Jerez Eve (13) and Jaionni Outerbridge (ten) offering any real resistance.

Third-change bowler Reggie Baker led the Flatts attack with three for three, Cameron Smith seized three for 28 and opening bowler Leverock two for 13.

Flatts’ convincing victory enabled them to put more breathing space between themselves and the chasing pack.

PHC’s woes were further compounded by the loss for the remainder of the season of former captain Ellsworth Bean, who tore his Achilles tendon while batting during his team’s innings.

Elsewhere yesterday Devonshire Recreation Club beat Somerset Bridge by five-wickets at Devonshire Recreation Club.

Hewvonnie Brown struck an unbeaten half-century as the home side chased down Bridge’s 126 all out.

The opening batsman hammered ten boundaries and three sixes in an unbeaten knock of 74 and dominated a 63-run fifth-wicket stand with Paul Carr-Harvey, who chipped in with 15, as Devonshire replied with 132 for five in 24 overs.

Top order bat Deeraj Singh was next high man for the home team with 28 that included three sixes and two boundaries.

Torleair Caines’s one for 18 was the best figures by a Bridge bowler.

The visiting side found runs hard to come by after being sent into bat, quickly slumping to 23 for three and never recovering as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Devonshire seam bowler Jodie Maronie inflicted the heaviest damage with the ball as he claimed four for 35 while Levar Talbot, Chris Dailey and Xyon Outerbridge-Smith took two wickets each.

Lower-order batsmen Jason Smith and Omar Amory accounted for the bulk of Bridge’s runs. Smith thumped four boundaries and two sixes in his knock of 38 batting at No 7, while Amory, brother of former Devonshire all-rounder Anthony Amory, hit two boundaries in his innings of 20 batting at No 10.

Caines (14) and Jermaine Nisbett (ten) were the only other Bridge batsmen in double figures while there were 18 extras.
