Minors: Waist sizes have changed
Janeiro Tucker and Dean Minors are champing at the bit to renew their rivalry during the inaugural Cup Match Legends Twenty20 at Somerset Cricket Club tomorrow.
The former Cup Match players have been appointed as the captains of teams named in their honour and laden with former greats to have left their mark on Cup Match.
“Everybody at Somerset is excited about this Legends match which should be very interesting,” Tucker said. “I think it’s going to be a good turnout.
“I think it is a good idea for Somerset and St George’s to put something back with their former players playing again around Cup Match time.”
The Janeiro Tucker XI squad also consists of Ricky Hill, Olin Jones, Dexter Basden, Roger Trott, Irving Romaine, Wendell White, Jeff Richardson, Charles Swan, Kyle Lightbourne, Sheridan Ming, Jacobi Robinson and Sammy Robinson.
Tucker said it is an honour to have the team named after him.
“It’s nice to be honoured by Somerset in any way,” he said. “Especially for the contributions I have given them over the past 20-plus years, so it’s something that I look forward to.”
Minors is also honoured to captain a star-studded team named after him.
“I am absolutely honoured and feel privileged to have the opportunity to captain such fine and legendary cricketers of the past who continue to hold the game in high regard,” he said.
The Dean Minors XI is also comprised of Arnold Manders, Charlie Marshall, Graham Fox, Clevie Wade, Ricky Hodsoll, Allen Richardson, Herbie Bascome, Eugene Foggo, Ryan Steede, Gary Brangman and Dale Fox.
“Waist sizes have changed not to mention body parts that have to be cared for a bit more than before,” Minors said. “But we will do our utmost best to try and entertain the crowd.
“I would like to thank Somerset Cricket Club for staging something like this. They have to be commended.”
Tucker is the most prolific batsman in the history of Cup Match and also a former Somerset captain, and Minors a former wicketkeeper-batsman for St George’s.
The match starts at 6.30pm, with free admission.
