Onias Bascome’s confidence is soaring after ruthlessly thumping the season’s first century.The St George’s cricket captain hammered a boundary laden 111 in a losing cause against Willow Cuts at Wellington Oval during the opening round of the Premier Division Twenty20 competition this month.Bascome’s aggressive 50-ball knock, which included 14 fours and six sixes, earned him Bermuda Cricket Board Premier Player of the Week accolades.Reflecting on his swashbuckling knock, the 25-year-old all-rounder said: “It was a good knock. I got myself in and got going.“The ball was feeling good coming off of the middle of the bat. Once I got about 30 [runs] I knew how I was going along that the century was always there for the taking.”The son of Herbie Bascome, the Bermuda coach, seems to have taken a real liking to T20 having hit multiple centuries in the format.“The century has definitely boosted my confidence a lot, especially not playing so much cricket this year,” Bascome added. “Maybe I can get another century because I know that I am capable of doing that.”Bascome made a promising start against St David’s at Lord’s at the weekend but was unable to go on after being stumped for 11 after charging left-arm spinner Derrick Brangman.“I didn’t get off today [Sunday] but that’s cricket,” Bascome said. St George’s went on to claim their first win of the season after beating St David’s by 21 runs.The visiting side posted 142 for seven after electing to bat on an excellent track and restricted St David’s to 121 for eight in their reply.“We have a good containing team,” said Bascome, who picked up two wickets with his gentle seam.Bascome said his team is going through a rebuilding phase and harbour lofty ambitions.“This season we are mainly focusing on building a team so that next season we can look to push for a championship,” he added.Bascome’s century arrived a day after Stephan Dill, the Warwick Workmen’s Club captain, stroked the season’s first half-century in his team’s convincing win over Bermuda Under-19s at Wellington Oval.The opening batsman smashed 60 from 28 balls and hit five fours and as many sixes.“The ball was coming on nice,” Dill said.“The team trust me to do a job and it felt good to go out there and execute that job.”
