It may well have been written in the stars that Virat Kohli would provide a match-winning contribution for India in their T20 World Cup match against arch rivals Pakistan on Sunday.

For just a few hours before Kohli’s sparkling 82 not out off 53 balls led his team to a four-wicket win in Australia, the youngest Kohli on the planet was making her first appearance at King Edward Memorial Hospital.

Born less than 24 hours before her illustrious namesake walked to the crease, Kohli Gii Wilson arrived in the world at 4.36am on Saturday morning.

New mother Anshawna Wilson is doing well after the birth and is scheduled to be released from hospital this morning along with her daughter, but she found the time to tell The Royal Gazette the family reason behind the name of her second child.

“My grandmother passed away two days before my birthday on February, 26, 2021,” Wilson said.

“Kohli was one of her favourite cricketers. She’d been to the world cup to watch him and she would always make the whole house quiet down to watch the cricket.

“Her name was Jean and my first daughter Roma Jea was already named after her so I couldn’t use the name for my second daughter.

Jean Caisey: her love of cricket is the inspiration behind naming Kohli Gii

“One day I was at work and all of the guys from India that I work with had the cricket on and were watching. Kohli popped up and I decided that would be her name. That day he made a century, so I stuck with the name and here we are today.

Also, my grandfather passed away last year on September 29, 2021. His name is Gilbert Caisey and the Gii in Kohli's name is in honour of him.“

Understandably, Wilson had more pressing matters to attend to than keeping abreast of cricket matches on the other side of the world, but pediatrician Richard Fulton took great delight in informing her of Virat Kohli’s accomplishments when doing his regular morning rounds.

“Dr Fulton came in and was really excited,” Wilson said. “He asked me if I’d seen the game or the result and I was like ‘No, I’ve been up all night.’”

“Kohli is great and the coincidence is amazing. I know my grandmother is always around.”
