This is just a personal break – don’t get it twisted about Cup Match

I gather a few eyebrows have been raised about my return to the island, especially now that the Vitality Blast T20 season has started in England. No drama, I’m just having a bit of a personal break, I guess it is called — just taking a bit of time to myself. Nothing has happened with Sussex. There hasn’t been any falling-out with the coaches or anything; it was just something I felt I needed personally and I was given the time to do so by the club.

There is no date as of right now when I’ll be back at Hove, but it’s just one of those things where it’s myself and the club speaking weekly or every couple of days to monitor it. I signed a one-year deal at the end of last season, which was something both parties were happy with. Anything beyond that is a bridge we have to cross when we get there.

These are exciting times at Sussex — the red-ball team are doing well in the LV= Insurance County Championship and we have much promise in the white-ball team with new signing Michael Burgess, the wicketkeeper-batsman, returning to the club this week on loan from Warwickshire.

Michael was a Sussex Sharks player when we made finals day in 2019 and will be a welcome addition to the squad. Joining him as new recruits are Pakistan’s leg-spinning all-rounder Shadab Khan and fast bowler Nathan McAndrew, of Australia. I’ll be cheering them on from a distance for the season opener against Somerset at Hove on Friday.

I look forward to linking up again before too long, but in the meantime I’m enjoying being back home. I had a lot of fun in the game for Bailey’s Bay against St David’s; it was nice to be back playing cricket on home soil. Bay have got a pretty good team and showed again last weekend in the win over St George’s, who are probably the team that we will be challenging for the title.

The boys have been putting in a lot of hard work. It has been nice to be around the group and share some of my knowledge and some of my experiences around cricket with them. We’ll see what happens in the next few weeks and hopefully they can bring the title back down to Bay.

It is inevitable that the longer I stay in Bermuda the more I will get linked with playing in Cup Match for the first time since 2014. When people see you on the street or around the games, it is one of the obvious things they ask you. But any such talk is very premature — it’s not something that has been confirmed to anyone or something that has been openly spoken about. This time on island is just a bit of time for myself at home and we’ll go from there.

One of the benefits of being home at this time is to catch up with the national programme regarding preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Regional Qualifier here in September.

We had a lot of talks about the preparations of North Field at the National Sports Centre before heading to Argentina for the sub-regional qualifier. Now I have managed to get up there and see it being trained on, which was a positive, and there should be matches there this weekend for the first time this season.

Everything looks like it’s going in the right direction. We’ve had a few meetings since I’ve been back home about those things and about the tournament coming up, and just making sure we get the right things in place in order for us to be successful. As a leadership group, we’re pretty happy right now.
