As Bermuda seek to spoil the party for host nation Canada at the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup Americas Qualifier, Zeri Tomlinson has been handed the captaincy when the teams clash today.

With regular captain Zakao Hart omitted from the squad, wicketkeeper Tomlinson will take up the role. Hart has endured a difficult tournament, with his knock of four runs in the opening match against the United States being followed up by three consecutive ducks.

He is one of two players dropped from the squad along with Omari Deshields, with the pair replaced by Cadence Douglas and Callum MacFarlane.

“We have made a couple of changes to the team, brought in two players, Cadence Douglas, an off spinner, and opening batsman Callum MacFarlane,” coach Arnold Manders said.

“Zakao Hart and Omari Deshields have been dropped, Zeri Tomlinson will be the captain.”

Defeat to the United States by seven wickets on Tuesday left Bermuda with one win and three losses from four matches and out of contention to qualify for next year’s Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka, with that race now between Canada and the US.

Manders’ side can disrupt Canada’s aspirations, should they pull off an upset against the only side with a 100 per cent record.

If that happens and the US overpower Argentina on the same day, it sets up a blockbuster clash between the nations on the final day of the competition.

While, Manders has made peace with the fact that his team will finish behind Canada and the US, he has been left to bemoan the lack of match practice in the build-up the tournament.

“We will finish third, it’s good but not so good,” he said. “We are a young team, it’s fine, that’s where we thought we could finish.

“The more they play, the more they will learn. Canada and United States have played a lot of cricket. We just have to play more cricket before such tournaments.”

It has not been doom and gloom for Bermuda, with players such as Jermal Proctor, Tomlinson and Luke Horan all enjoying encouraging performances.

Horan has picked up eight wickets, to go with the 46 runs he has scored, while Proctor has 137 runs to his name including a knock of 90 against the US.

Tomlinson has notched up 97 runs, with the highlight of his time in the middle being the 67 he scored against Canada.
