Somerset Cricket Club (Somerset won toss): St David’s beat Somerset by five wickets

Onias Bascome took matters into his own hands by putting on another exhibition of power hitting with 52 off just 25 balls to lead St David's to a five-wicket win over Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat on a tricky surface, Somerset failed to really get going.

Derrick Brangman made a loud appeal for leg before on just the second ball, but umpire Roger Dill dismissed the claim. Naquan Smith also tried to make a similar appeal on the first ball of the third over against Jermal Proctor, but opposite umpire Ted McKirdy waved it away. The Somerset opening bat would then strike two lovely boundaries in the next three balls.

Aaron Paynter stepped up for his second over, and Proctor failed to pick up his pace, edging into the gloves of wicketkeeper Ricardo Brangman. The visitors held the faint upper hand at the end of powerplay, with Somerset at 30 for one.

Justin Pitcher came into the attack, and got Ebbin out when he cracked a shot straight to Marcus Scotland on the mid-wicket boundary. Captain Dominic Sabir and Alex Dore rotated the strike comfortably thereafter until the middle of the innings, with a 33-run partnership for the third wicket.

Brangman enticed Alex Dore to pick out his captain Bascome with the third ball of his third over, and then Alje Richardson played right back to Brangman for his second wicket.

Fubler, making his debut since the move from St George's, took his lone wicket on his fourth and final over, dismissing Dominic Sabir to put Somerset in serious trouble at 66 for five. Brangman concluded his strong spell with a third wicket on his final over. Onias took his second catch of the day to dismiss Antonio Darrell.

Tre Manders took a wicket in his lone over, with Ricardo Brangman showing his reflexes behind the stumps to dismiss Jerez Eve which saw Somerset at 102 for seven. Jade Morrissey had an impeccable innings batting from number seven, smashing four boundaries and two sixes to anchor an otherwise disappointing day with the bat, and Somerset posted 124 for seven.

Brangman led the St David's attack with three for 12 off his spell; Paynter, Fubler, Justin Pitcher and Manders had one wicket each.

Young Proctor started with a maiden over to apply some temporary pressure, but the visitors were largely in control from that point. Marcus Scotland was really patient with his aggression, but a slower ball from Sabir fooled him.

Dean Simons picked up where his strike partner left off, making 25 off 32. Simons and Tre Manders were out to Darrell and Jahnico Francis respectively, which led into the start of the madness from Bascome. His five boundaries and four sixes gave the visitors their victory momentum, and Derrick Brangman smashed a four off Darrell to clinch the win.

Apart from Bascome's powerful knock, Scotland and Simons were the only other batsmen to hit double figures. Sabir took three wickets in a challenging bowling period, while Darrell and Francis had one apiece; Proctor bowled two maiden overs.
