Western Stars and Southampton Rangers savour winning week
Western Stars and Southampton Rangers continued their fine starts to the First Division T20 campaign with back-to-back victories at the weekend.
Leaders Stars beat Somerset Bridge by 28 runs and Warwick Workmen’s Club by 70 runs to make it three wins on the trot to open their campaign.
Rangers are also off to flyer after beating Western Counties rivals Willow Cuts by seven wickets and Somerset Bridge by 73 runs to remain unbeaten in their opening three fixtures of the season.
Stars were helped to victory over Bridge at Lord’s on Saturday by opener Ryan Tyrell, who led the batting with 61, from 66 balls, before retiring hurt as Stars posted 128 for five after electing to take first strike.
Seamer Seth Campbell then claimed three for 11 as Bridge were restricted to 100 for seven in reply, with Donnie Charles topping their batting with 24.
Stars then capped another flawless weekend with victory over Warwick at Sea Breeze Oval on Sunday.
Brian Hall blasted 45 from just 24 balls as Stars piled up 183 for eight after being sent in to bat. Campbell, Hall, Rohan Davis and Sebastian Davis then took a wicket each as Warwick replied with 111 for four, with opener Kamau Leverock stroking a team-high 43 at the top of the order.
Rangers strolled to victory over Cuts at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday. All-rounder Dion Stovell claimed four for 23 and second change Makai Jacobs two for 34 as Cuts were restricted to 130 for seven after electing to bat.
Openers Nacori Smith (39) and Stovell (39) then led the chase as Rangers posted 131 for 3 in 12.4 overs in reply, with Cuts captain Ras Solomon Burrows claiming two of the wickets to fall.
Rangers then made it three wins on the trot with victory over Bridge at Somerset Cricket Club the following day.
Stovell blasted 70 and put on 61 for the first wicket alongside fellow opener Smith as Rangers scored 196 for five after electing to bat.
Leule Simmons, Darrien Gibbons, Swayne Campbell and Jacobs then took two wickets each as Bridge were restricted to 123 for nine, with opener Patrick Dill top scoring with 36.
Chalking up their first win of the season was PHC, who defeated Flatts by six wickets at Lord’s on Saturday.
Seamer Charles Trott claimed two for 10 as Flatts posted 123 for five after opting to bat first, with top-order bat Dajon Carey top scoring with 37.
PHC replied with 127 for four as captain Davin Dill led the chase with 55 at the top of the order.
Cuts also picked up their first points of the season with a 13-run win over PHC at PHC Field on Sunday.
Cuts scored 115 for eight after being sent into bat with wicketkeeper Shaquille Bean top scoring with an unbeaten 22.
Cuts captain Burrows then claimed three for 18 and Kwasi James and Kamal Bashir two wickets each as PHC were restricted to 102 for nine. Middle-order batter Sage Carter hit their highest score of 26.
