Erasmus helps flying Spartans put the squeeze on champions
North Field,National Sports Centre (Hamilton Parish won toss): Sandys Spartans beat Hamilton Parish Hurricanes by 64 runs
Sandys Spartans are still looking the team to beat after thrashing Hamilton Parish Hurricanes in the opening match on day two of the Bermuda Smash Invitational.
While there were no batting fireworks on the same scale of their opening victory, Sandys made 122 for nine after being put in to bat on a flat wicket before skittling champions Hurricanes for just 58.
Spartans coach Jeff Richardson was pleased with the result given the changeable weather conditions over the past 72 hours.
“The wicket was playing weirdly after the heavy rains over the past few days,” Richardson said.
“They bowled really well for the most part, so it was difficult to post a total. We knew it was a challenge to defend a small total, but we did an exceptional job in the field and they never got going."
Spartans captain Kamau Leverock again attempted to set the tone and cracked two fours in the first over by Odean Smith, but mistimed the final ball straight back into the arms of the Jamaican fast bowler.
Leverock’s fellow opener, New Zealand’s Chad Bowes, drove ten runs off Mike Agard before stepping too far out to the off spinner and falling victim to a Sinclair Smith stumping for 12.
Delray Rawlins smashed one six of his own before George O'Brien trapped him leg-before on 11 and that allowed Namibian all-rounder Gerhard Erasmus, who ended up winning the man-of-the-match award, to show his skill with the bat.
Erasmus launched one towering six over long-on and hit a cute boundary towards mid-wicket before American Raj Nannan took the catch as Erasmus tried to hit another six over the same boundary.
Flatts regular Jan-Johan Nel failed to really get going as he made a snail-paced ten, with Nannan making a running catch to dismiss him.
Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, but Parish struggled with their line, bowling 15 wides, two of which went racing to the boundary.
Bailey's Bay all-rounder Sharye Tavares put in a decent cameo at the bottom of the order, making 13 not out to help Sandys post a score of 122.
Hurricanes never managed to gather momentum in what looked a manageable run chase before they took to the crease.
Australian opener Josh Brown was caught by wicketkeeper Bowes off Leverock for just one run and Alex Dore was quick to follow him back to the pavilion with the same score after Nel took a catch at mid-wicket off the tallest player in the tournament, 6ft 10in Marcus Bean.
A combination of poor timing and excellent bowling resulted in Hurricanes slumping to 17 for three at the end of their batting powerplay and they were never able to showcase the immense power that won them last year's tournament, with none of the overseas players striking a single boundary.
Derrick Brangman and Sinclair Smith made brief cameos of 13 and ten runs respectively before Brangman became the first victim of the unorthodox pace of Erasmus.
Smith holed out to Dennico Hollis and Kyle Hodsoll failed to get off the mark before being caught by Nel off Erasmus to clinch victory for Sandys.
