Sea Breeze Oval (Bailey’s Bay won toss): Bailey’s Bay beat Cleveland County by seven wickets

Despite missing captain Terryn Fray and Delray Rawlins, who are on international duty, Bailey’s Bay had more than enough to defeat Cleveland County easily on Sunday.

Jamaican Lashaune Weir and Barbadian Michael Agard did the damage with the ball as medium pacer Weir found conditions to his liking as he claimed five wickets for 24 runs from his allotted 10 overs.

He was ably assisted by spinner Agard, who recorded figures of four for 25 from only five overs to give stand-in captain Kyle Hodsoll a bright start to the 50 overs season.

“Looking at the wicket, it had a bit of moisture in it so I sent them into bat,” Hodsoll said.

“Our opening bowlers did well but didn’t get too much assistance so I made the two changes in bringing on Weir and Agard to attack the stumps a bit more and it paid off as they got nine wickets between them.”

Having been sent into bat, only three Cleveland batters reached double figures with opener Derwin Adams scoring a team-high 24 before he was trapped lbw by Weir.

Steven Bremar and Macai Young both scored 12 before falling victim to Agard with Young featuring in the team’s highest partnership of 15 runs with Amari Davis as the tail brought some respectability with Cleveland bowled out for 88 in 26 overs.

Needing only 1.76 runs per over in their run chase, Bay opened with Coolidge Durham and Sharye Tavares but the two could combine for only 12 runs before Tavares edged one to wicketkeeper Bremar.

Azende Furbert joined Durham and the two would rotate the strike, picking their shots carefully. Durham smashed Young for a massive six over the long on boundary, which landed in the water just off Grotto Bay.

The two put on 28 runs for the second wicket before Furbert was out lbw to spinner Q’Shai Darrell for 16 with the score on 40. Zakao Hart would follow Furbert shortly after when falling victim to a good, two-handed ‘goalkeeper style’ catch by Young, who moved to his right to give Darrell his second wicket.

Rodney Trott then joined Durham and the two batted maturely with some sensible stroke play to cross the target with an unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership worth 41 runs to reach their target in 13.3 overs.

Darrell was the pick of the Cleveland bowlers claiming two wickets for 21 runs with captain Mackih McGowan claiming the other wicket for 20 runs.
