Maple Leaf North-West Ground A (Bahamas won the toss): Bermuda beat Bahamas by seven wickets

Onias Bascome struck a swift 43 off 20 balls as Bermuda secured their first win at the ICC T20 World Cup Americas final qualifiers with a comfortable victory over Bahamas.

Bascome, who walked in at No 3 and walked off as man of the match, displayed his clean hitting with two fours and five sixes to record his third-highest score in T20 Internationals as Bermuda reached their target of 91 in 9.5 overs.

Chare Smith’s exceptional performance with the ball to record figures of two for 11 at an impressive 2.75 runs an over, was supported by the spin duo of Derrick Brangman (two for 17) and Dominic Sabir (two for 19) to confine Bahamas to a lowly 90 for eight in 20 overs.

The win lifted Cal Waldron’s side off the bottom of the standings to third in the four-team competition.

“After the loss yesterday, we wanted to try and finish the game as fast as possible to bring up our net run-rate,” Bascome said.

“This is obviously a big boost coming off a loss. There’s good spirit in the team, all the boys are working hard together and we just do what we have to do leading into the last game.”

Fray, who chipped in with a valuable 24 at the top of the order, was in a better mood after seeing his team recover from a deflating 110-run loss to Canada on Sunday.

“A much better performance today,” the Bermuda captain said.

“After yesterday, we knew what we had to do. We came a little bit more focused, a little more energetic and got a good victory.

“We always wanted to get the target as fast as possible without losing a lot of wickets. Delray came to the top to see if we could attack in the powerplay. That didn't really work out so we tried going back to normal.

“Our opening bowlers bowled good lengths at the start. The left arm spinners were right on point, so we’re happy and we’ll take this victory into the next match.”

Chasing a low total Bermuda lost Delray Rawlins in the second over after the former captain was asked to open with Fray in the absence of Tre Manders. Fray and Bascome put on 61 for the second wicket before the captain went with 16 still needed.

Bascome also departed before taking the team over the line, leaving Jonté Smith and Marcus Scotland to knock off the winning runs in the tenth over.

Bermuda’s bowlers showed a lot of hunger after being asked to bowl first. Zeko Burgess made the breakthrough at the end of his second over, Bahamas captain Gregory Taylor picking out Fray at point to depart for an eight-ball duck.

Smith struck at the start of the fourth over as Marc Taylor dragged one into the hands of Burgess. Bahamas struggled for runs as they were 21 for two at the end of the powerplay.

Brangman was on the money four balls after being brought on to bowl as he broke through Kervon Hinds’s defence, with Bahamas 37 for three midway into their innings.

Bascome displayed his brilliance on the field to run out Festus Benn. The Bermuda bowlers then applied the pressure, with some fine fielding from Burgess who finished with three catches to go with his one wicket.

While Eugene Duff did hang around for a 33-ball 31 before he was caught and bowled by Dominic Sabir, Bahamas were not able to post a score enough to give Bermuda any trouble.

In the early match of the day, Canada defeated Cayman Islands by 59 runs to pick up a second win.

The four teams take a break on Tuesday, before they resume hostilities on Wednesday with Bermuda facing Cayman while Canada square off with Bahamas.
