Cricket umpire Roger Dill breaks ankle during match
Local cricket umpire Roger Dill is recuperating after breaking his ankle during a Premier Division 50 overs match between Somerset and Cleveland County on Sunday.
Dill was moving from the square leg position in the first innings of the game when the incident happened, with Emmerson Carrington, the president of the Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association, confirming the umpire was taken to hospital.
“I can confirm that Roger Dill suffered a broken ankle during a match at Somerset and is being treated in hospital,” Carrington told The Royal Gazette.
“It was just an unfortunate twist of the ankle while moving, and it turned out to be broken. It’s hard to tell how long he will be out at this stage.”
As the BCUA does not provide more than two match officials for league fixtures, Reid Jones, the Somerset groundsman, stepped up to umpire in order for the match to continue.
“We do not provide third officials for regular league matches,” Carrington said.
“Reid Jones, the groundsman at Somerset, agreed to step in with the other official. From the reports, he did a fantastic job.”
At 68, Dill is one of the oldest cricket umpires on the island and before the mishap on Sunday, he was in the middle for the Western Counties first-round encounter between Willow Cuts and PHC at White Hill Field.
Dill was in contention to form part of the team of officials for Cup Match this year but the injury now puts his participation in doubt
