Cup hopefuls Bridge lose services of key player Kamau Leverock
Challengers Somerset Bridge have been forced to make at least one change to the team that will attempt to dethrone champions Willow Cuts in the second round of the Western Counties at White Hill Field today.
The hosts will have to do without the services of guest player Kamau Leverock, who is no longer eligible to play for them having joined county rivals Warwick from Somerset.
The star all-rounder last featured for Bridge in a 158-run loss to Warwick in the second round of last year’s Western Counties, which brought their reign as champions to a halt.
Leverock will not be involved in this year’s 50 overs series because he must wait a year before he is eligible to play for Warwick under the rules of the competition.
Willow Cuts and Bridge had yet to confirm their teams at press time.
However, it is understood that the champions could make changes to the squad that beat PHC by 169 runs in the opening round of the competition at White Hill Field last week.
Cuts posted 256 with MVP Deunte Darrell scoring 115 off 75 balls. Kwasi James then claimed five wickets for 19 runs as PHC were bundled out for 87 in 25 overs.
Action gets under way at 11am.
Domestic cricket continues tomorrow with St David’s hosting Eastern Counties rivals and champions Bailey’s Bay at Lord’s in the day’s top Premier Division 50 Overs match-up.
Bay are coming off a massive 324-run win over their other Eastern Counties rivals Flatts in the previous round and will look to keep the momentum going with a favourable result against hosts St David’s, who are making their first appearance in this year’s competition.
In the remaining top-tier matches, St George’s host Cleveland County at Wellington Oval, while Warwick face visitors Somerset at Southampton Oval.
Unbeaten Somerset top the Premier Division standings on run-rate over Bay and St George’s.
There are also three First Division 50 Overs matches scheduled ,with Somerset Bridge hosting Devonshire Rec at White Hill Field, Western Stars doing battle with Willow Cuts at Sea Breeze Oval, and PHC taking on Southampton Rangers at PHC Field.
Unbeaten First Division leaders Rangers hold a ten-point advantage over PHC and Cuts, who are level on 20 points.
All 50 overs games start at 10.30am.
