Sea Breeze Oval (Warwick won toss): Warwick beat Bailey’s Bay by 70 runs

After rescuing victory from the jaws of defeat against Flatts in the Eastern Counties first round on Saturday, Bailey’s Bay were brought down to earth with a heavy defeat at Sea Breeze Oval on Sunday.

After choosing to bat first, Warwick captain Staphen Dill top scored with a stubborn knock of 45, which included two fours and three sixes, after coming in at No 8. Robert Richardson, in at No 10, also frustrated Bay’s bowlers, chipping in with 28 as Warwick’s lower order contributed 100 runs to the team’s total score of 202.

“Today, the team came together as a whole,” Dill said.

“The lower-order batters did really well to help steady the ship and put up a respectable score then the bowlers did their part to see us through. We are looking to survive in this Division and e are not out of the woods yet. This was a good win today so hopefully the net run-rate will assist us.”

Warwick opener and Cup Match prospect Luke Horan scored 27 before he was out lbw when trying to reverse sweep. Wickets fell regularly after that with Warwick in a spot of bother at 89 for six after 25 overs.

Dill dominated a 42-run, eighth-wicket partnership with Shonari Boyles-Simons as the two carried the score close to the 150 mark before he swung anxiously at a ball that stayed low and was bowled by Rodney Trott for 45.

Left-hander Robert Richardson played some textbook strokes with a straight bat before he was last man out when bowled by Skylar Young as Warwick posted a challenging score of 202.

Seasoned spinners Delray Rawlins and Trott were the pick of the Bay bowlers with three for 34 and 37 runs respectively.

In reply, Bay opened with Terryn Fray and Coolidge Durham but Warwick got the early breakthrough they were hoping for when Horan sent Fray’s off stump tumbling in his third over with the score on 15.

Warwick would get the second breakthrough during the ten-over powerplay when Malachi Jones trapped Durham leg before to leave the Eastern Counties champions at 29 for two.

Kamau Leverock also got among the wickets when Azende Furbert edged one to Jones at first slip with Bay now struggling at 29 for three. Jones claimed his second wicket when knocking Rawlins’ off stump back for ten as bay were reeling at 42 for four from 14 overs.

Sharye Tavares and Jarryd Richardson tried to settle the innings with a fifth-wicket, 29-run partnership before the latter skied one to Callum MacFarlane who took a low catch on the boundary.

Tavares (30) got baited by a slow one from James MacFarlane and went for a big shot only to mis-hit and give Dill an easy catch at mid-off.

The game was evenly balanced as Bay were 100 for six at the halfway stage of their innings before Luke Fulton took a good running catch to dismiss Michael Agard.

Jordan Burgess followed shortly after when Horan dislodged his stumps to claim his second wicket as Warwick took command of this match.

Bay were now 117 for eight and would never recover as they were skittled all out for 132 in 33 overs. Leverock was the pick of Warwick’s bowlers with three for 19 and he was ably assisted by young MacFarlane, who claimed three for 33. Horan and Jones got two wickets apiece for 20 and 29 runs respectively.
