Somerset team manager on mend after heart attack

Somerset Cup Match team manager O’Brien Morrissey is making a steady recovery in a Boston hospital from a heart attack he suffered last week.

The 61-year-old’s health took a turn for the worse shortly after fixing a flat tyre on his wife Andrea’s car last Tuesday morning.

“I started sweating profusely and felt a little tightness on my chest, so I went inside to get another cold shower,” Morrissey told The Royal Gazette.

“I was still sweating so I sat on the couch and told my wife my chest hurts a bit and she called 911 and the ambulance came and got me.”

Tests at hospital later revealed Morrissey had suffered a heart attack and he was flown to Lahey Clinic in Boston the following day for further treatment.

“They found I had a blockage in one of my main arteries so they put a stent in it and I didn’t feel anything,” he said. “I feel like a brand new man; no pain, nothing.

The ordeal has put paid to Morrissey’s plans of being involved in Cup Match this year.

“I am not going to be manager and will not be able to take the excitement too much,” he said.

“I have been in contact with the coaching staff and Matthew Fullerton will do a good job as manager in my absence.

“I was going to retire last year when Jeff [retired coach Jeff Richardson] and Mike [retired cricket chairman Michael Corday] left, but Janeiro ([coach Janeiro Tucker] asked if could do this year with him.

“Feel bad that I could not complete the job for him. But Matthew is more than capable.”

Somerset Cricket Club president Richard Scott said everyone at the club is keeping their fellow colleague in their thoughts and prayers.

“Certainly our thoughts and prayers are with OB (Morrissey) right now with this medical mishap,” he said.

“We were quite concerned when we got the news of the suspected heart attack on Tuesday. The team and of course the executive management and everyone was immediately concerned about his well being at that point.

“Of course it forced us to go into plan B and thankfully Matthew Fullerton has agreed to step in and assist with the managerial duties.

“But our concerns was always with making sure that O’Brien was going to be fine.”

Morrissey has served as Somerset’s manager since 2017.
