Tre Manders recalled by Bay for Eastern Counties

Tre Manders has been named in the Bailey’s Bay squad for the Eastern Counties second round against Cleveland at Lord’s tomorrow.

In the only change to Gus Logie’s playing XI, Manders comes into the Bay squad for Michael Agard, who is off island after being picked as a colt in the first-round win over Flatts last month.

Commenting on the team selection after the squad was unveiled to members at Sea Breeze Oval on Wednesday night, vice-captain Kyle Hodsoll stated that they decided to strengthen their batting after the near-calamity against Flatts.

Bay were bowled out for 106 and it took a great effort from the bowlers, with Derrick Brangman picking up six for 33 and Agard three for 45, to mop up the opposition for 96 and extend Bay’s reign as champions.

“We have decided to beef up the batting after that match against Flatts,” Hodsoll told The Royal Gazette.

“Flatts had us in a spot of bother and the batsmen have been challenged to do better against Cleveland. We bowled really well to defend that total, but that was too low of a total for us to run into that situation again.

“Tre Manders is in for Michael Agard, who is away with his family on vacation. Tre was around, but it was a different mindset for the first game. He had some things that he was dealing with, and now he’s in for this week.”

Bay suffered a heavy 50 Overs defeat by St George’s in their last outing, but inside 24 hours all focus had shifted to their Eastern Counties defence.

“The preparations intensified for the Eastern Counties on Monday,” the Bay vice-captain said.

“We started off with a team-bonding session, then we had good training sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a light session planned for Thursday.”

While Cleveland have been relegated from the Premier Division in both the Twenty20 and 50 Overs formats, Hodsoll is mindful of the impact that guest players can make to a side.

“We’re expecting Cleveland, like any other team, to come and challenge us to get the cup,” he said.

“We just have to be as prepared as we can be and do our best to defend the cup. I’m pretty sure they’re going to pick a couple of guest players — guys like Dion Stovell, Allan Douglas Jr and Treadwell Gibbons can make a difference.

“Whatever their situation is, I’m sure they’re going to come ready to challenge for the cup.”
