St David’s crowned Premier Division 50 Overs champions
St. David’s Warriors were crowned Premier League 50 overs champions without a ball being bowled on Sunday.
Going into the day as league leaders, St David’s needed to beat Warwick to guarantee the title but could have been caught by either Somerset or St George’s if they lost.
However, with the game at Somerset Cricket Club between the two title challengers abandoned early as a result of bad weather, St David’s were crowned champions before lead umpire Dexter Smith called off their match at Southampton Oval after consulting with both team captains.
St David’s captain Derrick Brangman was delighted that the team were crowned champions.
“I was hoping to win the championship on the field but luck won’t have it that way,” Brangman said.
“We put in the hard work and have reaped the rewards.”
After an overhaul in players at the start of the summer, with some big names brought into the club, Brangman wanted to thank his team-mates for their contribution.
“I wish to thank my team for their continued support and commitment throughout the season,” he said.
“ To finish the season undefeated and as champions is remarkable. From the spinning classes to the beach runs, it showed that the preseason hard work paid off.”
“I also wish to thank Kevon Fubler, who bowled well this season as well as Onais Bascome and Tre Manders for their leadership and encouragement in helping with our younger players to help groom the team and be successful.”
