Alex Dore captures Cup Match Safe Hands Award

Somerset Colt Alex Dore’s two catches in Cup Match have secured him the Bermuda Healthcare Services Calvin “Bummy” Symonds-Dennis Wainwright Safe Hands Award.

Dore executed the catches while fielding at silly mid-on off Kamau Leverock’s bowling, with a one-handed effort leading to the demise of Marcus Scotland for a duck before his second catch resulted in the dismissal of Nzari Paynter for one.

With the award carrying an element of sportsmanship, Dore also appears to have ticked the box when he discouraged his Somerset team-mates from running out Delray Rawlins. The St George’s No 4 batter had sprinted to check on his Bermuda team-mate after he took a blow trying to take a catch.

“When I took the first catch, I had a feeling that I had won the award,” Dore told The Royal Gazette.

“It was a very good catch and it’s not easy taking those kinds of catches. I’m also left-handed and it’s not easy taking a catch with your non-dominant hand.

“The silly mid-on position is not an easy one to occupy. We had talked about it before, especially Bongy [Kamau Leverock] and I.

“We laughed at the idea that St George’s had prepared a bouncing wicket and that was going to be a definite spot where there were going to be a lot of chances. It was just a matter of staying locked in and taking the catch when it comes.”

As he received his trophy and $2,500, it was hard to ignore that Dore had his left hand in a cast.

“I was playing cricket in the United States and unfortunately the ball hit me while I was batting,” the 28-year-old said.

“It broke my middle finger and fractured my ring finger. The funny part is that I was struggling most of the year with injuries, so I guess this is a way of telling me that I need to take a break.

“It’s good to get some recovery in and take a break. This happened on August 12, so hopefully next week the cast comes off.”

Announcing Dore as the winner, Vincent Hollinsid, who took over the administration of the accolade from the late Wainwright, stated that the Somerset debutant had stood out.

“Alex distinguished himself in this year’s Annual Classic with two superb catches fielding close to the batter,” Hollinsid said.

“With sharp anticipation, safe hands and commitment in the field it set him apart and earned him this recognition.

“What makes this achievement especially incredible is Alex is a colt and to be acknowledged so early in his career speaks volumes of his talent and potential.

“We are confident that he’ll continue to develop into one of Bermuda’s finest cricketers.”

Hollinsid also acknowledged the presence of Natalie Wainwright, Dennis Wainwright’s widow, and Valerie Symonds, the wife of Calvin “Bummy” Symonds.

“We are joined by two remarkable women,” he said.

“Their steadfast support for their husbands was instrumental not only in their outstanding sporting careers, but also in the life of this prestigious award.

“We thank them and their families for allowing us to honour the legacies of two of the greatest cricketers Bermuda has produced.”

Mahesh Reddy, BHCS medical director, commended Hollinsid for taking over the administration of the award from the late Wainwright.

“This award, named after two of Bermuda’s cricketing greats, recognises excellence in fielding and sportsmanship during the annual Cup Match classic,” he said.

“Following the passing of Dennis Wainwright, the administration of this award has been carried forward with great dedication by Vincent Hollinsid.”

The event was also used to celebrate Glenice Simmons, a third-year biomedical science student at the University of Kent. Simmons has been interning with BHCS during the summer break for the past three years.
