Irving Romaine and Roderick Masters to coach Bailey’s Bay
Former team-mates Irving Romaine and Roderick Masters will share head coaching duties at Bailey’s Bay.
Club president Stephen Outerbridge confirmed yesterday that the pair have agreed to succeed Gus Logie at Sea Breeze Oval for the upcoming cricket season.
“Irving and Roderick will share the head coaching position at Bailey's Bay,” Outerbridge told The Royal Gazette. “They are going to oversee the senior team for the foreseeable future.”
Former Bay and Bermuda captain Romaine is no stranger to the position having previously served in the role.
Outerbridge also revealed that Rodney Trott has been appointed as captain of the club’s Twenty20 team and fellow all-rounder Kyle Hodsoll as their junior technical director.
“Kyle Hodsoll is going to be our junior technical director and Terryn Fray remains skipper of our 50 overs team with Rodney Trott captain of the Twenty20 team,” he said.
Outerbridge said the appointment of Trott as captain in the shorter format was done to take some of the load off Fray, who is captain of both the national team and Somerset’s Cup Match side.
“Looking at the responsibilities that Terryn has, he is captain of every team,” Outerbridge said.
“So to ease him up a bit, especially early in the season when the national team is travelling, Rodney will come in and assist with leading the Twenty20 team during those periods. It was actually Terryn’s idea.”
Outerbridge anticipates a smooth transition with Romaine and Masters taking over the helm of the club’s senior team.
“Irving has captained Bermuda, Rodney has captained Bermuda and Terryn has captained Bermuda,” he said.
“I am also going to play a few games and have captained Bermuda as well, so we have a good base of leaders and we’re happy to move forward from Gus Logie
“It was a good period for our cricket under Gus and we learnt a lot. I think we’re the first to ever have an international coach take a league team. It was an experiment that we tried and we had a good bit of success, so now we have to continue and build upon that.”
As well as a change at head coach, Bay will have to do without one of their star players Delray Rawlins, who has joined Premier Division rivals Southampton Rangers. But Outerbridge feels that the departure of the former national captain was inevitable given his close ties with Rangers.
“He's born and raised at Rangers, so I think that was expected at some point,” he said.
“It didn’t come as a surprise to us. Delray wanted to seek another challenge and we are never a team to hold anybody against what they want to do. We wish him success, but not too much, playing at Rangers.”
