Manders loses out in Legends final in Los Angeles
Andre Manders and his Rest of the World team-mates came up short of glory after losing to Canada by six-wickets in the USA Legends Over 60 International Quad Series final in Los Angeles on Friday.
The Rest of the World scored 198 for four after being inserted on a damp pitch at Wright Cricket Field by Canada, with Bermudian all-rounder Manders stroking 26 from 58 balls before being run out in the nineteenth over.
His team found themselves reeling at 58 for four before an unbroken 140-run fifth-wicket partnership between Aadil Chagla (79) and Simon Balcombe (70) carried them to a respectable total in their allotted 42 overs.
Pradeep Rasiah Nadarajah, Kenny Ghirdarry and Rohit Roy were the pick of the Canadians attack with one wicket each.
Canada replied with 199 for four in 32.2 overs thanks to solid knocks from their top order batters.
Steve Nobrega led the chase with 73, Allan Desouza added 63, Vince Correia 20 and Graham Castanheiro an unbeaten 14.
Castanheiro and Melwyn Fernandes (7) featured in a match-winning 14 -run fifth -wicket partnership that carried their team across the line with 9.4 overs to spare.
Fourth-change bowler Chetan Shah led the Rest of the World attack with two for 30 while Andy Gregory claimed one for 40 with the new ball.
Manders (0-31) shared the new ball for the second straight match but was unable to open his account.
The former Western Stars and Somerset Cup Match player cited challenging pitch conditions and dropped catches as key factors in his team’s demise.
“Basically whoever won the toss won the game,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“Out here the wickets are a little damp for the first hour and they bowled really well.
“We struggled during our first ten overs. The ball was swinging around and coming off slow and as the day went on it got better and better, and it doesn’t help when we drop five catches.
“I got run out for 26. I just started going and got run out by a direct throw. I didn’t get any wickets and they were always on top.”
The loss was the Rest of the World’s second to Canada in three days having also lost to them in the group stage by 25-runs.
Canada, who finished the tournament unbeaten, reached the final after topping the group and were joined by Rest of the World who pipped USA Legends — Eagles for second on net run rate.
Manders held his own with bat and ball on his debut at the tournament having scored 130 runs in four visits to the crease, including a half-century (53) against Canada in the group stage.
He also claimed seven wickets with his off-spin bowling with best figures of four for 24 against USA Legends -Hawks during the group stage.
