Ton-up Leverock blasts Sandys Spartans into Bermuda Smash final
Kamau Leverock produced a dazzling fireworks display with the bat to power Sandys Spartans into the final of the Bermuda Smash Invitational for the second straight year.
The Spartans captain and man-of-the-match hammered 107 from 54 balls and featured in two century partnerships that laid the foundation for his team’s 54-run win against two-time defending champions Hamilton Parish Hurricanes in the first semi-final at North Field, National Sports Centre, today.
“This doesn’t surprise me from Kamau,” Spartans coach Jeff Richardson told The Royal Gazette.
“Under normal circumstances in a format like this you just go right at it, but I think he was very disciplined in his approach.”
Leverock was dropped in the deep when on 65 and made the most of his reprieve as he tore into the Hurricanes attack, dispatching West Indies player Quentin Sampson over the long on boundary to bring up his hundred in style off 48 balls, and become only the second batter behind Barbados and West Indies all-rounder Raymon Reifer to achieve the feat in the T20 tournament to date.
The left-handed batter added 109 for the first wicket with wicketkeeper and New Zealand player Chad Bowes (34) and 101 for the second with fellow all-rounder Delray Rawlins (59) before being dismissed one run shy of the tournament’s highest individual innings of 108 not out, achieved by Reifer two years ago.
Hurricanes’ left-arm spinner Derrick Brangman bore the brunt of Leverock’s vicious assault on the bowling as he went for 26 in his final over, which included three successive sixes.
The Spartans piled up 220 for four in their allotted overs, which is a new tournament record after being sent to bat.
“It was unbelievable and I think it was a good toss for us to lose because we probably would’ve bowled first,” Richardson said.
“The field is a little bit heavy as well so a few balls that would normally go to the boundary did not go, so to post that type of score is remarkable indeed.”
The Spartans’ win avenged a five-wicket defeat against the Hurricanes in last year’s final.
“We feel we have something to prove as we came up a little short last year. I think our batting let us down last year,” Richardson said.
“But we know if we get a certain total we have the team that can defend it, so today I think we just batted them right out of the match.”
Rawlins also entertained the crowd with some power hitting of his own and also lived a charmed life having been dropped twice before reaching his half century off 23 balls.
He was eventually dismissed three balls after Leverock departed attempting to clear the long-on boundary rope, but by then the damage had long been done.
United States left-arm spinner Raj Nannan was the pick of the Hurricanes bowling with two for 32.
In reply, an asking rate of 11 runs per over ultimately proved a task beyond the champions’ reach as they were restricted to 166 for eight by a disciplined Spartans attack led by seamers Isaiah O’Brien (two for 24) and Michael Agard (two for 31), who claimed two wickets apiece.
Several Hurricanes batters made promising starts but were unable to go on as wickets tumbled at regular intervals as the Spartans closed in on victory.
Middle-order batter Jonté Smith was the champions’ top scorer with 34 from 18 balls.
The Spartans will face Pembroke Panthers in the final on Saturday (4pm) with coach Richardson feeling optimistic about his team’s chances of success this time around.
“This is our second final and we know what it feels like, so it’s not going to be new to us,” he said.
“We know what we need to do, and it’s just a matter of executing.”
