Southampton Rangers have gone with a largely unchanged side for the Western Counties third round showdown with Somerset Bridge at White Hill Field today (11am).

Swayne Campbell, a left-arm spinner and late order batter, has replaced Oronde Bascome, who is unavailable for the match after scoring 53 runs in his team’s victory over Warwick in the last round.

According to Herbie Bascome, the Rangers coach, his son will be available if they make it to the final round, where Willow Cuts are waiting on August 22.

Shane Hollis, the Bridge coach, believes the presence of guest players Jermal Proctor and Steven Bremar gives them a good chance of success against a formidable Rangers side.

“We are looking to put in the effort and be disciplined in our approach,” Hollis said.

“Understanding the quality in the Rangers team, our approach is to make them fight for every run and wicket.

“We also have quality players of our own as well. With the addition of our two guest players, Steven Bremar and Jermal Proctor, we’ve been given a much-needed boost that will lift our levels.

“At Somerset Bridge, we focus heavily on development and are now starting to see our younger players step up.

“Here’s the chance for them to do so in front of the Western Counties crowd against one of the best teams on island.”

Meanwhile in the Premier Division 50 overs, Rangers, who are on top after winning all their three matches, take on second-placed Bailey’s Bay at Sea Breeze Oval on Sunday.

Somerset are at home against St David’s, while Warwick Workmen’s Club face Willow Cuts at White Hill.

St George’s, who have only played twice, are on a bye this weekend. The East Enders had two of their matches affected by the non-availability of umpires last month, over alleged verbal abuse of one of the match officials by a member of the club’s executive committee in June.

Following an apology from St George’s for what they termed “spectator behaviour”, it seems the stand-off with the umpires is over, with officials likely to be appointed for their remaining matches of the season.

In the First Division 50 overs, PHC host Flatts, with Cleveland County and Bridge squaring off at Lord’s, in St David’s.

In another cricket development, top female umpire Precious Smith is in Cayman Islands for the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier. Americas NextGen XI, Argentina, Canada and the United States are playing in the tournament.

Ja’Shay Trott has been selected to play for the NextGen squad. The young cricketer, who plays for Cleveland County, will be under the mentorship of Terry-Lynn Paynter, the former Bermuda international cricketer.
