Bermuda prepared for North American Cup double-header
Severe weather in Cayman Islands has forced wholesale changes to Bermuda’s schedule at the North American Cup.
With no play possible for three straight days since Sunday, the fixtures have been reorganised with Bermuda now due to face Cayman Islands twice today. Cal Waldron’s side will also feature in a double-header with Bahamas on Friday.
“They’ve come up with a new format to get all the games in,” Waldron told The Royal Gazette.
“Our first match is starting at 10am and the second at 2.30pm. It’s come to the point of trying to play cricket and get everybody playing an equal number of matches with the double-header format.
“I’m glad we play them twice in one day, so the logistics of transporting everybody around is not as complicated.
“We play then get a rest day and then play again, so we just prepare ourselves to play Cayman. We’ve been conducting talks and interviews with the players, trying to keep them thinking and motivated as much as we can.
“It’s now just a matter of taking those talks and putting things into the practical sense of applying in a match situation.”
At the end of the round-robin stage, the second and third-placed teams will meet in the semi-finals on Saturday, with the winner advancing to face the top-ranked side in the final the following day.
Bermuda suffered a shock defeat to Cayman when the two teams met at the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Regional Final in Canada last year.
“We just got to go out there, take care of the two matches against Cayman and hopefully put ourselves in a good position to be able to just go straight to Sunday after the Bahamas matches,” Waldron said.
“We’ve kind of changed personalities a bit, so there’s some players on their team that we know very little about, some players in our team that they don’t know anything about, so it’s an even contest.
“But, as always, the game is played on the field, so you want to get out there and execute. It’s just going to be tricky and awkward because we’re going to play them back-to-back.
“So you get to look at them and then you go and play the second match and be like ‘OK, let me correct what I did wrong in the first match’.
“That’s the only logistics of playing the double-header against the same team, but it’s something that’s got to be done.
“It’s more about keeping the bodies fit and healthy because you only have a 90-minute period between the two games.
“We’re got to be wary of the conditions. We only have a day in between to recover and be ready for the next double-header, so we hope we’ll have fit players again on Friday.”
While the bulk of the squad arrived in Cayman last Wednesday, some of the players such as captain Terryn Fray joined the group later.
“We trained last week before some of the players arrived,” the coach said.
“The rain has been persistent that we haven’t been able to get outside and do anything. A lot of the stuff we’ve been doing has been in the gym at the hotel, just to keep guys active and moving.
“Everybody is here now, but we haven’t had a chance to have a full session yet. Wednesday will be the first time that everybody’s actually been together, but that’s why we've been engaging in talks and all of the other activities as best we can as a group to give everybody the collective feeling that we’re all in this together.”
