Arrests made after the Carefree IV arrives
Two boats and a “significant quantity” of narcotics were seized in a pair of police raids yesterday morning.A total of five people were arrested, including the crew of the Carefree IV.Carlos Rogers, 41, and Kwesi Hollis, 36, sailed the 31-foot sloop into Heritage Bay, St David's yesterday 52 days after they left the Dominican Republic for Bermuda.Their delayed arrival sparked a two-day air search by the US Coast Guard in the days before Christmas.The pair was arrested yesterday on suspicion of drug offences. The arrests came only hours after three men were arrested and a quantity of narcotics were seized in a drug bust off Penhurst Park Dock in Smith's.Inspector Kuhn Evans said a marine unit patrolling the North Shore intercepted an unidentified vessel.He said officers found a “significant quantity” of what was believed to be narcotics, and seized both the boat and the suspected drugs.Insp Evans would not state the type of drug or the quantity found in the raid.“It's early in the investigation and that is all I can say at this time,” he told The Royal Gazette.Passers-by stopped on North Shore and watched as officers processed the bales of drugs.An elderly man who stopped to see what was happening said it was a “good thing” that police were confiscating the drugs. “At least that is not on the streets,” he said. Another man who lived in the Smith's area said: “The less drugs in this community the better. Drugs have been a major problem over the years.“It's the underlying issue with gang violence; drugs are usually at the core. Making [the dealer's] way of life difficult will definitely help with the tension on the Island.”Carefree IV reportedly set sail from the Dominican Republic on December 1.A merchant ship found the crew running low on food and water on December 18, 210 nautical miles south-southeast of Bermuda.After receiving supplies, the pair set off again, telling the merchant vessel's crew they expected to arrive in Bermuda five days later.When the ship didn't appear, the US Coastguard launched an unsuccessful two-day search.More than a week later, the sloop was spotted by the MV Bay Ranger. Its crew reported Mr Hollis and Mr Rogers safe and well 150nm southeast of Bermuda.The cargo ship provided the sailors with water and provisions before sending them on their way back to Bermuda.Police were waiting to arrest the crew when they arrived on the Island yesterday morning.They conducted a search of the vessel using K9 dog sniffer units, following the men's arrest.A small crowd of people gathered at the St David's dock to watch from behind yellow police tape as the search was carried out.A Police spokesman released the following statement yesterday afternoon: “Police officers have intercepted two vessels this morning during a marine operation, one being the Carefree IV.“As a result, five individuals have been arrested, including the two man crew of the Carefree IV and a significant quantity of suspected drugs has been seized.“An investigation into the matter is ongoing.”Last month three Bermudians were arrested after police stopped a boat carrying more than $13 million worth of cannabis and cannabis resin.In the first nine months of last year, the total amount of drugs seized by police was $8.3 million.
