Man hospitalised after Front Street assault

A 31-year-old Bermudian man has spent the weekend in hospital after being assaulted at the end of a night out.The man was set upon at the taxi stand close to The Bermuda Bistro at The Beach on Front Street at about 3am on Saturday. He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was yesterday described as in a “stable” condition on a general ward. The man, who has not been named by police, had to undergo surgery hours after the assault and is expected to be released from hospital today. The brazen attack took place at closing time as crowds of people were making their way home and several police officers patrolled Front Street. Onlookers watched in horror as the man was knocked to the ground and severely beaten. It is not known how many people were involved in the fight but witnesses reported that the assault involved “a gang of people”.They said a man, who looked to be in his late 20s, was handcuffed and taken away from the scene in a police car.Police would not confirm whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the assault when The Royal Gazette asked them a series of questions yesterday.Anyone who witnessed the attack or who knows anything about it is asked to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011.
