National Security Council parameters announced

Bermuda’s Governor Sir Richard Gozney has announced the parameters of the new National Security Council. Premier Paula Cox made the announcement in the new Budget statement last month.

Eleven members will sit on the council with Sir Richard and the Premier, including Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva, Bermuda Regiment CO Brian Gonsalves, National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief, Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess and Attorney General Kim Wilson

According to the statement from Government House, the new council will focus on internal security matters as it relates to the prioritisation of the Bermuda Police Service and its role in law enforcement in Bermuda.

The council will be provided with regular briefings on internal security and significant criminal activity by police, but operational and staffing matters will remain outside the council’s remit.

The new council will meet every two months, although meetings can be called at any time by the Governor in consultation with the Premier.
