London robbery leaves Governor designate blind in one eye

Incoming Governor George Fergusson has lost the sight in his left eye after being mugged in London on Friday evening.

Governor designate George Fergusson has lost the sight of one eye after being seriously assaulted and robbed in London.Mr Fergusson, 56, was set upon in a daylight attack while walking in Margravine Cemetery and Park, Hammersmith, as he made his way to a friend’s house for dinner at 7.30pm on Friday.He was taken to hospital with facial fractures but, according to the UK’s Sunday Times, surgery was too late to save his left eye. A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.Government House said he still expects to take up his new post in Bermuda next month.“What has happened has been a shock, but I’m concentrating on recovering quickly and looking forward to taking up my new role and, all being well, expecting to arrive as planned in May,” Mr Fergusson said in a statement.According to the UK’s Daily Mail, Mr Fergusson was walking alone as his wife was already at the dinner party. He was searching for the address on his BlackBerry when he was punched so hard he fell to the ground.The attacker failed to snatch his phone, but made off with a small quantity of cash. Mr Fergusson staggered to Charing Cross hospital for help.The Mail reported his wife Mrs Fergusson saying: “He had been out of town for a meeting and was meeting me at the dinner party. He was going through the cemetery when he pulled out his BlackBerry to check the address. The attacker thumped him straight in the eye, knocked him to the ground and knocked him around a bit.”A former British High Commissioner to New Zealand and Samoa, Mr Fergusson also spent four years as Consul-General in Boston before being seconded in 2003 to the UK Cabinet Office as head of the foreign policy team.His career as a diplomat has also included time in Northern Ireland, Ireland, South Korea and the Pitcairn Islands.According to the Mail, his family history has been plagued by tragedy: his mother was killed when winds blew a tree onto her car, his father died from a stroke and his 20-year-old son Alexander died after being hit by a taxi while pushing his bicycle across a bus lane.
