West End MPs react to report of armed robbery

Area MP’s in the West End area have expressed shock at the “unsettling” news of an armed robbery in the Spring Benny Road area of Sandys that has left a family shaken with fear.Randolph Horton, the sitting MP for Constituency 32 which includes Spring Benny said: “Bennys Bay has been a relatively quiet neighbourhood up until now.”“It just goes to show that no neighbourhood is safe from the outrageous behaviour of some of our citizens,” said Mr Horton. When contacted by The Royal Gazette, he said he sought to find out who the victims were as soon as he heard the news, and met with them soon after the attack that occurred early Saturday morning.“I reached out as soon as I found out,” said the area MP. “I spoke to them at length and they explained to me what happened.“I am disgusted because this sort of thing significantly dampens their quality of life, they now live looking over their shoulder whenever they go home; and that’s no way to live,” said Mr Horton. Now he plans to push for “better street lighting in the area” in follow up to this attack. Mr Horton also spoke with another long time resident who plans to start a neighbourhood watch group “for area residents to look out for each other”.Mr Horton said he was “not happy” to hear that no one even turned on their outside lights when the woman in distress “laid on her car horn to alert area residents”.“Now more than ever I’m feeling that its even more important for neighbours to be extra vigilant, frankly I was a bit surprised to hear that no one turned on their lights while the attack was in progress,” he said.“When I asked the victim if she thought she was targeted, she could think of no reason for the attack, moving forward she does not feel safe in her own home right now,” said Mr Horton.“I’m going to push for more lighting which may at least help deter attacks of this nature,” he said. “I plan to talk with the police to make sure they will be extra vigilant as well,” he added.“I’m feeling that now its even more important than ever for neighbours to be extra vigilant. I have great concerns because we don’t seen to be reaching enough of our young people,” he said.“Too many of our young people have fallen through the cracks, I think this is a reflection of young people not getting the attention they deserved in their formative years,” said Mr Horton.“We’ve got to get back to the basics that worked for the greater community, in the meantime I just wished the victim and her family well with the hope that they get back to a point o feeling safe and comfortable in their own home,” he said.Meanwhile, Terry Lister, another PLP MP who sits next door in the constituency of Sandys South said: “The assailants have inflicted both pain and fear on the family involved by assaulting them in this manner.“No one should be attacked while simply going about their business,” said Mr Lister. “Some will look at the state of the economy and loss of jobs and suggest that the assailants may have been forced to act in this manner, but nothing gives anyone the right to viciously attack anyone else,” he said.“This behaviour must be stamped out, we cannot accept or excuse this behaviour,” he added. “Instead we must recognise the attackers are violent criminals who must be dealt with.“I encourage anyone and everyone who has any information that may be helpful to report on this incident or what they know, to report it either to the police directly or to Crimestoppers.”In the interim Mr Lister said: “My sympathy goes out to the family and I ask that they be held up in prayer at this point in time.”United Bermuda Party MP in Southampton West Central, Charles Swan said: “As a west end MP this is my community, and this is very unsettling.”In a statement released to this newspaper he said: “Bermudians are becoming increasingly frustrated by these outrageously violent and brazen attacks on innocent fellow citizens.“The young men involved, if they read the newspaper, should know that they bring shame, on themselves, their families and Bermuda as a country,” said Mr Swan.“They should also know that, as Bermudians, and during this our heritage month, they would not wish the act that they have perpetrated performed on themselves, their families or friends.“They should also know that the their actions not only bring severe grief to the victims and all right thinking Bermudians, their actions will also engender a desire to offer assistance, it is available, it is here, and within reach,” he said.As Bermudians he said: “These types of crimes are crimes against the quality of life we have all long enjoyed. The perpetrators can help bring an end to the suffering by turning themselves in, and we urge them to do so immediately.”Mr Swan urged the culprits to help themselves, their families, the victims and the country in general to “come forward”.“Failing this, it is hoped the Police will receive assistance to gather the needed evidence to bring the culprits to justice,” he said. “It is incumbent on all law abiding citizens in Bermuda to cooperate and give evidence to help solve crimes of this nature,” he said.“The violence we are seeing is distressing, but we as a people must come together and work towards making our community safer because it’s the only one we have,” said Mr Swan.Meantime, police are appealing for anyone with information that will assist to contact the Somerset Police Station at 234-1010 as the investigation continues.
