Police issue security advice after burglaries

Police are warning business owners to consider beefing up their security after several burglaries.Business owners are being asked by police to keep the minimum amount of cash at their premises and make irregular bank deposits often. It is recommended that money left overnight should be put in a floor, wall or regular free-standing safe.In detailed security recommendations, police have urged business to have deadbolt locks fitted to all exterior doors, which are recommended to be a solid core and at least one and three-quarter inches thick. Door hinges outside of exterior doors should have hinge bolts in the door frames on the same side or close by the hinges.Police also recommend metal bars be fitted on windows internally and set back no less than two inches from the internal surface of the wall. Each window bar should be grouted a minimum depth of three inches into the masonry. Where necessary, replace window glass with security glass as an alternative to bars.Secure wall mounted air-conditioners with “L” shaped brackets or carriage bolts, to prevent them being pushed in or pulled out.Further recommendations include installing an audible and silent alarm system and outdoor lighting at least 12 feet above the ground, or alternatively a passive infra-red security lighting system which illuminates when movement is sensed.Businesses should restrict the number of vehicular entrances and cut overgrown trees and bushes to increase visibility. All outbuildings and equipment should be secured with a padlock and a chain.Video cameras, recorders, monitors, and article surveillance equipment can reduce shoplifting.Plain-clothed or uniform security guards can be hired for additional protection.
