Police: Shooting may be gang related

Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro

Police have not ruled out the possibility that the shooting of a 25-year-old man on Alexandra Road was gang related.Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro said yesterday: “We cannot rule out that this incident is related to gang activity, and as such we want the public to understand that we do not believe this to be a random shooting.“Detectives from the Serious Crime Unit (SCU) are actively following up on the evidence in this matter, and speaking with witnesses.”“Our Community Action Teams (CAT) are also working in this area to speak with area residents, and reassure them that the Bermuda Police Service is pursuing this matter aggressively, to bring the offender or offenders to justice.”The shooting took place at around 9.40pm on Friday, with the victim suffering a gunshot wound to the shoulder.Mr Pedro said the victim, a Devonshire man, was yesterday still recovering in hospital, but was described as being in stable condition.Police said they were encouraged by the number of people who have come forward to assist the investigation, but Mr Pedro urged anyone who may have seen the incident or the shooter to contact investigators.“We are keen to speak with anyone that may have seen the suspect or suspects in the vicinity at the time of the shooting,” Mr Pedro said.“The suspect may have been riding a dark coloured or black scooter motorcycle, and left Alexandra Road, exiting onto Middle Road at the Fort Hill (ZBM) junction.“I am appealing for anyone that saw this incident, or can provide information that can assist in identifying and bringing the offender or offenders to justice, to contact detectives from the SCU.”Anyone with information is asked to contact the SCU on 247-1739 or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 800-8477.
