Area residents were shocked and outraged after a 25-year-old man was shot at his Devonshire home on Friday night. At last check, the man who sustained a single gunshot wound to the abdomen at a residence in Alexandra Road, was listed in stable condition in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.Residents, who asked not to be named, were outraged that after years of “no incidences like this in their neighbourhood, gunplay has finally hit close to home”.One woman said she was sitting outside on her patio with a friend when the shots were fired.“I heard the gunshots, I couldn’t tell you how many because they’re were firing off too quickly,” she said.“But it was basically right next door, and I didn’t bother to stop and see what was going on. I just go up and told my friend to ‘let’s go inside’,” she said.“Then I heard the police arrive.“I can tell you that the residents up here are not impressed, especially the senior residents.“We all know this is a drug-infested neighbourhood, and we want to know why the police do not make patrols around here regularly,” she said.“This is too close for comfort for all of us, and I’m told the young man who was shot, was standing in his doorway when it happened.”A long-time resident of 42 years, said she heard about the shooting the day after.“I wasn’t asleep at the time but I didn’t hear anything,” she said.“I always thought all of these years even with all the young people up here and lots of young men who hang out in this area that nothing like would ever happen. Now to find out that it has causes a very strange feeling,” she said.“It was such a shock to me and very sad to think that something like this could happen right next door when we’ve never had these problems for all of these years.“It’s a very sad change and I would think a lot of residents up here are very concerned.“All I can say is I’m shocked, especially when you think that we’re right next door to the police at Prospect. We even have a few police officers who live up here,” she added.“Let’s hope this is not the trend for this neighbourhood and I would hate to think it’s gang-related, especially since we’ve never had this kind of thing come to our neighbourhood before.”
