Cruise passenger fined over cannabis

Magistrates Court (photo by Glenn Tucker)

A 62-year-old visitor was yesterday fined $500 for possession of cannabis and importation of the drug into Bermuda.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Martin Prince, from the Bronx in New York, was arrested after customs officers found 6.08 grams of cannabis in his cruise ship cabin.

Prosecutor Karen King said customs officers were alerted to a smell from a cabin on deck ten of the Norwegian Dawn.

A drug sniffer dog pinpointed a closet and a table under the TV after they entered the cabin.

The officers found a bottle containing plant material and a handmade cigarette.

Prince returned to the cabin and when confronted by the officers, said: “Yes, it’s mine.”

He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he told officers that the drugs were for his personal use. He pleaded guilty to the charges.
