Covid-19 rules breach warning from police

Police today warned the public faced heavy fines of up to $6,000 if they broke the latest Covid-19 rules.

A spokesman said that – although most people had stuck to the rules – police officers, soldiers and the Bermuda Coastguard had still detected breaches of curfew and illegal mixing of households.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes added: “Our primary goal is to help keep residents safe during this pandemic.

“However, anyone found violating the rules should expect to appear in court. Therefore, I urge everyone to do their part and abide by the regulations.

He told the public to check the rules to ensure they were not caught out and to allow plenty of time to get home before the 8pm to 6am curfew kicked in.

Mr Weekes added that recreational boats had to be berthed by 7pm.

People can be fined $6,000 for a first offence, but up to $10,000 and/or three months in jail for repeat offences.

Continued offences are hit with a $1,000 fine for every day the law is breached.
