Drink-driving continues to be a ‘prolific offence’, police say

Clampdown: police have been out in force as part of a crackdown on bad driving habits (File photo)

Fifteen motorists have been arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired in the past four weeks, according to police

A crackdown on motorists has also revealed that drivers continue to get behind the wheel without insurance or a valid driver’s licence.

Releasing the latest Operation Vega figures today, Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell said that the number of driving offences had increased in the past month.

Mr Cardwell said that driving under the influence continued to be “a prolific offence” that presented “a major concern” to authorities.

He added that disobeying traffic signs and red lights was also a prolific problem on the roads, particularly at the traffic lights at the Paget junction during rush hour.

Mr Cardwell said: “We have been deploying roads policing to those lights of late and we have reported many for traffic offences including driving without due care and attention, driving without reasonable consideration and disobeying the red light.

“There is a current trend where motorcyclists travelling east, towards the red light, go into the offside lane, wait for the light to turn green then shoot off across the first car stopped at the light and weave between the first car travelling west. We have been heavily policing this bad riding behaviour.”

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman added that nine people were charged before the courts, fined and banned from the roads for driving while impaired in October.

The spokesman said: “Please be aware, failure to license your car, attracts a $750 fixed penalty. For failing to license a motorcycle, the fixed penalty is $250.

“Operating a vehicle without a driver’s licence carries a fixed penalty of $100. The courts will levy a $1,000 fine if you are found to be operating an uninsured vehicle.”
