Two people injured in shooting

Two men have been shot ― one in the chest and one in the hand, police said.

At about 11.13pm yesterday, police received several reports of gunshots in the Carolina Bay, George’s Bay Road area, Southampton.

A police spokesman said: “Upon the arrival of officers and other first responders at the scene, it was ascertained that two people were injured in the confirmed firearms incident.

“One victim was shot in the chest, the other sustained a bullet wound to the hand.

“Both victims were attended to at the scene by EMTs before being transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Hospital, where at last check, they continued to receive treatment for their injuries.”

Detective Inspector Jason Smith, of the serious crime unit, said the person shot in the chest was undergoing surgery and his condition was not known.

He added: “There were a number of people in the Carolina Bay dock area and they might have witnessed what took place.

“There were several boats that were unloading passengers and we are very interested in you making contact with us so we can try and establish more details of what took place.”

On the people responsible, he said: “From our lines of inquiry, we believe they came on a motorbike and left on a motorbike. Two people on the bike.” He said it was too early to say if it was gang related.
