Videos released by police investigating double murder
Video footage that showed four people wearing bike helmets was released this evening as detectives continued their investigation into a West End shooting that claimed two lives.
The Bermuda Police Service urged members of the public to make contact if they recognised anyone from the clips.
A woman aged about 33 and a man aged 29 were killed when shots were fired “indiscriminately” at people in Legends sports bar in Somerset last night.
Three others were injured, one of whom has since been discharged from hospital.
Members of the community on the island and abroad were shocked by the incident, which prompted calls for calm and togetherness, as well as resistance against the urge to retaliate.
Detective Chief Inspector Jason Smith said this afternoon that video footage would be released, “asking the public if they can recognise those persons … persons of interest to this inquiry who entered the Legends bar and left”.
He added: “So when you see that footage, if you can identify those particular persons in that footage, you can recognise them, those are critical to our lines of inquiry and helping to advance this investigation.”
In one clip, the four people are seen going up an external stairway, while in the other they make their way on to a porch area that has tables and seating.
Some items of clothing worn by the individuals can be made out in the footage, including gloves, a Puma sweatshirt and trousers with a distinctive pattern.
Mr Smith said that at about 10.30pm on Thursday the BPS received several 911 calls reporting a shooting at the bar.
Officers attended and found a number of people with multiple gunshot wounds.
Mr Smith said: “At the time of the shooting, we know from our investigation, there were about 14 patrons that were inside of the sports bar.
“They were enjoying themselves and socialising for their night.
“As a result of our lines of inquiry so far, we can confirm that there are four suspects, four persons of interest.
“We believe that those men were two-up on a motorcycle that travelled to the Legends sports bar and they departed on the same motorcycles and they headed in what we believe is a westerly direction.
“This particular incident is disturbing to us because shots were fired — we believe — indiscriminately at those inside of the club and unfortunately two persons have lost their lives.”
He said that police received information which suggested the motorcycles used in the attack were seen circling the area at about 10pm last night.
The detective said that of the three injured people, one was “more critical” but none had life-threatening injuries.
Commissioner of Police Darrin Simons said investigators had determined that handguns were used in the shooting.
He said the police recovered several shell casings from the scene and efforts would be made to determine whether the firearms used in the attack were previously used in other crimes.
Mr Simons assured the public that all available resources were being deployed to assist in the investigation.
He said: “Somerset, you are a tight-knit community. You know each other and you look out for each other and I’m specifically asking you to help us bring justice to those taken far too soon.
“Our forensic support unit has recovered significant evidence already and our digital forensic team is analysing CCTV footage that has already provided valuable leads, but we need your help.
“If you were in Somerset Road area between 10pm and 10.45pm last night, if you have any cellphone footage, any CCTV or any information, no matter how small you think it is, please contact us.”
He added later that “all the indications” pointed to the incident being a targeted attack.
Mr Simons said the BPS were fully committed to bringing those behind the shooting to justice.
He said: “The public can expect search teams out as we chase down leads that are generated through the investigative process.”
The commissioner said that officers would conduct stop-and-search exercises during patrols and asked the public for patience as there may be some inconveniences.
“Please work with us as we work to prevent future violence and bring offenders to justice,” he added.
A police spokesman said this morning: “The Bermuda Police Service wishes to thank members of the public for their response, so far, to the video clip of the alleged suspects in the incident which occurred at Legends bar, on Thursday night.
“However, we urge members of the public that should you recognise or are able to identify any of the persons in that video, do not attempt to take matters into your own hand and approach or, confront them.”
Detective Chief Inspector Derricka Burns is leading the investigation and can be contacted on 717-0921.
Witnesses can also contact the BPS on 295-0011, the serious crime unit on 247-1739 or the Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477. Alternatively, they can speak to any officer they know.
