One arrested and three ‘in hiding’ after Legends shooting

A man has been arrested in connection with a shooting in Somerset that left two people dead, police confirmed this afternoon.

Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, led a press conference where he highlighted how help from members of the public had progressed inquiries.

He said: “As a result of your information, we have made one arrest so far, absolutely based on your help, and three others are in hiding.

“They’ve gone to ground, as we say in policing parlance. They know that we’re looking for them.

“The reality is, as previously, there are people in the community who know exactly where these men are.”

Detective Chief Inspector Jason Smith confirmed the names of the two victims as Jasmine Smith, 32, and Shaquan Williams, 29.

They were killed when shots were fired “indiscriminately” at patrons in Legends Bar at about 10.30pm on Thursday.

Mr Simons said that the arrest did not guarantee the suspect would be charged.

He added that two bikes recovered over the weekend were believed to be connected to the incident.

The Bermuda Police Service said on Saturday that one of the people being sought was suspected to have been injured during the attack.

Mr Simons explained today: “We released some information that one suspect was injured. We believe that injury to be very significant, one that would require medical attention.”

He later said that one line of thought was that the person was “struck by a bullet”, but could not confirm where.

Addressing them directly, Mr Simons said: “We want to help. We want to ensure that you get the medical assistance that is required.”

Video footage that showed four people wearing bike helmets arriving on the establishment was released on Friday as detectives called on the public to help identify those believed to be connected.

Mr Simons said the use of social media in this case was “a double-edged sword”.

He explained that several photographs were circulating that people claimed were the alleged suspects — including the picture of a deceased woman.

Mr Simons called this “absolute nonsense” and confirmed that all the suspects were male.

He added: “My concern here is that people may confront, assault or otherwise act inappropriately and engage individuals that they believe may have been involved.

“What I want you to do is to call the police when you have information.

“I need you to note their clothing description, what they look like, tell us where they are.

“What I don’t want you to do is to take matters into your own hands.”

Mr Smith said he recognised that emotions might be “running high” and that police anticipated possible retaliation.

He said there would be increased police patrols in Somerset and areas where “tensions and hotspots are likely to exist based on historical incidents”.

Mr Smith said that “significant progress” had been made in the investigation.

He added: “There is a man who is in police custody. That came about as a result of execution of several firearms warrants; in fact, seven firearms warrants from Friday night up until today, looking for those who were responsible.”

Mr Smith said the 23-year-old was arrested on Sunday.

He added: “The assistance of the public is critical to us continuing to advance this investigation.

“We continue to make our appeal to you — the members of our community — who have information about the whereabouts of those men we are seeking.

“They know who they are and we are pursuing them.”

He said it was known that four suspects entered the bar and that the footage suggested they were all carrying firearms.
