One arrested after reported knife assault
A man has been arrested following an alleged armed assault in which a suspect brandished a knife over National Heroes Day holiday weekend.
According to police, members of the public raised the alarm and when officers arrived at the scene, they saw a fleeing suspect who was carrying a knife. The man disposed of the weapon, but it was recovered by police.
The suspect has been arrested and the arrest of a second suspect is said to be “imminent”. No other details were provided.
Superintendent Dennis Astwood, gold commander for the weekend policing plan, praised the community for their assistance.
He said: “I want to take this opportunity to highlight the good work of you the public, in once again helping to avert what could quite possibly have turned into a tragic situation.
“This is not an exaggeration. Anyone leaving their residence armed with a knife or any other weapon is not doing so for the purpose of defending themselves, they are doing so with the intent to do harm.
“The vigilance of you the public, and your willingness to take action by alerting your police service to wrongdoing, make for a potent partnership against that minority bent on antisocial behaviour and criminal activity.”
The incident was one of only a handful of crimes committed over the weekend during which police maintained a high presence.
There were a dozen public events between Last Wednesday, June 11, and today but according to police, these passed off without any reports of serious incidents.
There were four arrests for impaired driving after police set up roadside sobriety checkpoints, with the highest reading being 151 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.
