MarketPlace flags up fake birthday gift voucher

A supermarket chain has warned the public about false birthday gift vouchers circulating on Facebook.

The MarketPlace said fraudsters are using the company’s brand name, logo and imagery to promote the scam.

It said: “These posts are in no way affiliated with The MarketPlace.

“They appear designed to deceive the public into clicking on illegitimate links that may lead to phishing websites or request personal and financial information.”

The company said it was working to get the fraudulent posts removed, and has put out alerts on its social-media platforms.

The MarketPlace urged residents to verify the authenticity of any promotions before clicking on links or sharing personal information, and said all of its legitimate promotions are communicated solely through official channels.

The company added that it would never ask members of the public to provide credit card numbers, banking details or other sensitive information via social media.

The matter was reported to the Bermuda Police Service’s Financial Crimes and Fraud Unit.

Anyone affected by the scam should report their experiences to the police.
