Three arrested after being found with knives
The arrests of three individuals carrying knives has prompted police to remind residents that it is an offence to be armed in public with bladed items.
Yesterday, at about 5.45pm, officers engaged in stop-and-search checks along Middle Road in Sandys detained a 28-year-old male motorcycle rider.
The man had a knife under his bike seat, was arrested for possession of a bladed article and detained on outstanding warrants.
On Monday, shortly after 10pm, police officers on patrol in the North Street, Pembroke, area saw two people travelling on a motorcycle.
The pillion passenger was not wearing a helmet and when the officers attempted to stop the motorcycle, the rider refused.
The passenger, who eventually dismounted, was searched by officers and found to be in possession of a knife, as well as a quantity of suspected controlled drugs.
He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.
He has since been released on bail and is expected to appear before the courts.
On Sunday, police stopped a vehicle on Middle Road, Paget, after receiving reports that its occupants were involved in a disturbance at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club.
One of the occupants was arrested after being found with a knife during a search.
Antoine Daniels, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, thanked the community for providing information on people seen with weapons.
He said: “A number of these arrests were in accordance with section 315F of the Criminal Code Act 1907, which gives police officers the authority to stop and search people, as well as vehicles, for offensive weapons — particularly in anticipation of violence.
“We acknowledge some in the community have ongoing concerns about this section of legislation.
“However, its use, as stipulated, continues to assist the Bermuda Police Service in disrupting individuals who may have intended on causing harm to others, using weapons.
“I wish to remind the public that going armed in public is not only an offence, but it greatly increases the chances of the person carrying knives and other similar items being seriously injured, or worse.
“We thank you for your continued support in providing us information on individuals seen carrying weapons, or acting in a suspicious manner.
“Your assistance is making a real difference. Again, thank you.”
