Police update after shooting and two deaths
The death of a man whose lifeless body was discovered outside a residence on Fentons Drive in Pembroke is being treated as suspicious, police confirmed today.
Acting Detective Superintendent Jason Smith said that officers were trying to piece together the circumstances that led to the death.
He noted that the body found shortly before 2pm on Sunday had been “in a bad state of decomposition”, and said officers were still seeking to determine the man’s identity.
The report to police came from a person in the neighbourhood who discovered the body “just outside of their residence”.
Mr Smith appealed for area residents to provide any relevant information to police.
“Obviously, whenever there are circumstances where a body has been found, it raises cause for alarm,” he added. “As we investigate, one of the key things we are looking at is the forensic autopsy result.
He provided an update on a number of incidents “of note” that happened over the weekend, adding: “As you can appreciate, detectives and members of the Bermuda Police Service have been kept quite busy.”
On Friday evening, shots were fired at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club shortly after a police liquor licence check.
A 19-year-old man subsequently attended hospital for treatment of a leg injury, although police at the time could not definitively attribute it to a firearm.
Mr Smith said today that the gunshot wound sustained by the teenager was linked to the incident at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club.
The victim was treated in hospital and released.
Mr Smith explained that inquiries revealed there had been a congregation of men in what he described as an alleyway in front of the club’s entrance from South Road.
He added that a lone gunman walked in from South Road, approached the group and “indiscriminately shot at the crowd of men that were present”.
The detective said that police asked the group of men outside the club “if in fact a gun had been discharged”.
He added: “Unfortunately, the persons who were present did not assist or co-operate.”
The suspect wore a black and grey jacket, black trousers and white sneakers, as well as a black helmet with a dark visor.
The suspect was said to have left the scene the same way that he came.
He made a left turn heading east along South Road and “disappeared” in the area of a lay-by across from the sports club’s field where minibuses often park, and near the entrance to the incline known locally as Kilimanjaro.
Mr Smith appealed for anyone in the vicinity who might have seen the group of men at the club alley, or who noticed “a lone man running away from Rangers”, to contact police.
The suspect is believed to have gotten onto the back of a motorcycle, which then headed east from the scene.
He said any potential details from the public were “very important to our lines of inquiry”.
“There were several persons at the Rangers sports club on Friday night that witnessed this.”
Mr Smith added that the incident could not be definitively linked to gang activity at this stage.
He also addressed the death of a 71-year-old man who sustained a serious head injury during a fight on Front Street on Thursday evening, on the waterfront stretch between the flagpole and the No 1 car park.
At about 7.15pm, police attended after a reported fight and found “a man who had been assaulted”, named as James Burgess.
Mr Burgess was taken to hospital where his injuries were deemed life-threatening, and he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.
Mr Smith added that a suspect taken into police custody on Friday had appeared in court today to be charged.
He said that the island’s revamped CCTV system was “playing a key role” in each investigation.
“At the moment, as we speak, we have detectives who are reviewing CCTV footage to try and help us bring some clarity,” he said.
Anyone with information regarding the Front Street incident was asked to contact Detective Sergeant Odessa Phillips at 717-9193.
The Rangers shooting and the suspicious death at Fentons Drive are being investigated by Acting Detective Inspector Anneka Donawa, who can be contacted on 717-2250.
