Police have released a photograph of riders suspected to have been involved in a daylight shooting that claimed the lives of two men yesterday.

Nakai Robinson, 18, and Natrae Eversley, 23, were killed in the incident near the junction of Court Street and Dundonald Street at about 4.40pm.

David Burt, the Premier, called it a “callous and terrifying” attack.

It was condemned by Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, who vowed to commit the full resources of the Government to assist police.

Acting Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels offered condolences to the men’s families this afternoon.

He added that the pair were “callously gunned down in the prime of their lives as they spent time in a community space”.

A third man, aged 24, who also sustained gunshot wounds, remained in hospital undergoing treatment and was expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Mr Daniels noted that the island experienced four sudden deaths in a matter of days.

“This wave of violence is especially concerning, as it comes at a time when our island should be drawing together, not pulling apart,” he said.

Acting Detective Superintendent Jason Smith showed a photograph captured by CCTV of two men on a bike who were thought to have been involved in the incident.

He said that a description of the suspects provided by police from the scene of the incident yesterday was based on what officers had initially gathered from people present.

Mr Smith added that subsequent independent evidence meant that confirmed information could be shared with the public.

He explained: “The bike is a dark-coloured bike; it looks to be black. The rider of the bike is wearing a blue; it would look like a hooded sweat top, grey or light grey pants or jeans, and looks like white sneakers.

“The pillion passenger is wearing a tan-coloured jacket and what appears to be dark pants and also black sneakers.

“Both men are wearing black, full-face visor helmets.

“This is very, very critical to our lines of inquiry and as we are not even 24 hours into this investigation, the assistance that you can give us in recognising any of the two men on this bike is very important.

“Additionally, as a result of independent review, in particular of CCTV evidence, we can confirm that, in fact, the bike did come from the area of Ewing Street, on to Court Street where the shooting took place at the junction of Court and Dundonald Street.

“We do believe now, based on our independent review of evidence, that the bike would have made a U-turn on Court Street and went back towards Ewing Street, up Tills Hill, down Tills Hill, on to North Street and then the bike travelled somewhere in the area of Dutton Avenue — so gone past TCD.”

Mr Smith said that the key time to focus on was about 4.40pm, when Court Street was busy with people.

“We are really appealing to you, members of our community, on Court Street at the time who might have witnessed this shooting, who might have seen the bike,” he added.

“It’s August, we know that August is a very hot time, so it would be unusual for the persons to be dressed in the clothing that we’ve seen in the footage, so if that’s what grabbed your attention, please make contact.”

The senior investigating officer in charge of the investigation is Acting Detective Chief Inspector Kenten Trott, who can be contacted on 717-2345.

Mr Burt said: “The tragic events of yesterday, which claimed the lives of two young men, have shaken our island once again.

“My deepest condolences go to the families of those who were killed and who are facing unimaginable loss. As a father, I can only begin to comprehend the grief that the parents of the two victims are going through.”

The Premier added: “I am also praying for the family of the third victim, who is recovering in the hospital, and all of those who may have witnessed yesterday’s shooting or been in the vicinity, as such a callous and terrifying event took place in broad daylight on a busy street as workers and families walked around the City of Hamilton.“

Mr Weeks said: “Yesterday’s broad daylight shooting on Court Street, which has left two men dead and another in hospital, was a shocking and brazen act of violence. It must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost loved ones, and my thoughts are with the injured individual as he recovers. I commend those members of the public who stepped in to help at the scene.”

He added: “The Bermuda Police Service has my full support as they investigate this incident. I assure the public that the Government will provide every resource necessary to assist the police investigation.

"In the midst our shock and outrage, we as a community are not powerless; we can act. The more information that members of the public share with the police, the greater the likelihood of bringing to justice those responsible for these crimes.

"We can meet this tragedy with a strong community response that makes it clear that we condemn these crimes and express our determination to play a part in making that justice a reality.

"Call the police or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 800-8477, because silence is not the answer.”
