Weeks: My door has been open from the beginning

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, has refuted suggestions that the Government was not listening to the community as it worked to curb violent crime.

Mr Weeks said in a statement that he had an open-door policy for anyone who was genuinely committed to reducing violence in the community.

He added: “This is not the time for divided narratives or incomplete accounts of what is taking place. This is the moment for clarity, partnership and collective effort.

“My door has been open from the beginning and it remains open. The work is active, the partnerships are real, and Bermuda is strongest when we work together towards a common goal.

“In this case, safety and security in our country is the priority.”

Mr Weeks said that last Tuesday he met with Gladstone Simmons and members of the Emperial Group to discuss the issue, adding that he was appreciative of their honesty and willingness to collaborate.

He said: “Engagement has been continuous, genuine and ongoing. The meeting held this week is only one example of the partnerships that are already in motion.

“I understand the frustration that many in our community feel. People want to see change, and they want to see it quickly.

“I share that urgency, but frustration should not replace facts, nor should it erase the work already being done by community groups, agencies and individuals who are committed to being part of the solution.”

Mr Weeks said that the ministry has been meeting with sporting clubs, youth organisations and members of the wider community, working in collaboration with various entities and would continue to work with anyone willing to contribute constructively.

He also said that a trio of recent town hall meetings were not “just symbolic exercises”, stating: “They were intentional conversations designed to ensure that members of the public could speak frankly and openly challenge directly and offer a contribution.

“These sessions are part of a wider framework of collaboration that will continue.”
