Police provide ‘safe space’ for online sales
The Bermuda Police Service has invited residents to meet potential buyers of items from online transactions in the front of the Hamilton Police Station.
Martin Weekes, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, said that transactions can be completed in relative safety, given the obvious presence of officers as well as CCTV cameras in the area.
He also issued a reminder for people who choose to meet at another location to be proactive and remain vigilant.
It came after police warned the public to be wary about selling items online, following a report of a seller being robbed.
Mr Weekes highlighted guidance to follow while meeting buyers from online transactions.
He said: “Never go alone. Bring a relative or friend along and let other family members or friends know where and when the exchange is taking place.
“Meet in well-lit, public areas before the hours of darkness. Avoid inviting an unknown individual to your home.
“Take note of the vehicle used by the buyer or seller, including the colour, type and its licence plate.”
Mr Weekes cautioned people not to conduct transactions with anyone whose face is not fully visible.
If someone feels unsafe at the public meeting spot, at any point, they were advised to leave and contact the police immediately.
Mr Weekes urged residents to report any suspicious activity by calling 211 or 911 in an emergency, while online reports can be made for non-urgent situations through portal.police.bm.
