Junior cyclists in hunt for medals at Carib Championships

Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) president Peter Dunne is confident the team selected to represent the Island at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Puerto Rico can produce podium performances. The team consists of Gabriella Arnold, Vashon Cann, Tre-shun Correia, Mark Godfrey, Dominique Mayho, Molly Pilgrim, Daelen Richardson, and Deshi Smith. To be held on August 13-14, the championships will be decided over two events in each category an individual time trial and a road race with distances varying by category. The event will be the last for Mayho and Correira, who will be ineligible for junior competitions and carry high expectations with the rest of the squad competing in younger divisions.Cann, Correia and Mayho are returning for their third year and will race in the Junior Boys (17-18 years-old) group.Godfrey raced last summer for the first time and came home with the silver medal in the Juvenile Boys (15-16 years) division.Joining him in the younger group will be Bermuda Institute students Richardson and Smith. Both Arnold and Pilgrim will have their first experience at this level of cycling and will take part in the single category for Junior Girls (15-18 years).BBA president Dunne said: “We have selected the team with a view to the best possible results this year and with an eye on the future. This is the final year of eligibility as juniors for Dominique and Tre-shun and we have high expectations for them this year.“Both have had a very busy race season so far and are looking to building on their recent experience at the Island Games.“This will be Vashon’s first year in the older age group and he will be racing in a supporting role for Dom and Tre.“In the younger category, Mark did very well last year and will be leading Daelen and Deshi, both of whom are coming along very quickly but seeing their first international racing opportunity.“Gabby and Molly are also novices in this competition but at the lower range of the age group.”Dunne went as far was tipping any one of Mayho, Correira or Godfrey to win their division.“Dominique, Tre-shun and Mark will be at the top of their age category and bring a great deal of racing experience,” he added.“These three guys have a realistic shot at medalling in the road race and possibly the time trial for Dominique and Tre, but while they will be familiar with many of the competitors in Puerto Rico, the competition is very strong.“The girls’ competition has been growing over the years and the hosts will undoubtedly produce several very strong riders, so it is difficult to speculate on how Gabby and Molly will fare. We will continue to focus on getting them as prepared as possible.”The president, along with selectors Elliot Hubbard and Greg Hopkins, chose the team from a pool of eligible cyclists who put themselves forward for consideration.Hubbard said: “We are fortunate to have so many capable athletes to consider for this event. In the last several years our numbers of junior cyclists has grown dramatically, bringing new teenagers into this sport.”Since the start of the competition in 2006, Bermuda’s team have brought home four medals: Hayley Evans won the bronze in the 2008 time trial in Curacao, Sophie Adams also captured bronze in 2008 in the road race, while Izabella Arnold scooped a bronze in the 2009 time trial in Bermuda to go along with Godfrey’s silver medal in last year’s road race in Aruba.
