Mayho hoping to end junior cycling career on high
Dominique Mayho and Gabriella Arnold are both anxious to get racing underway when the junior Bermuda cycling team compete in the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Puerto Rico this weekend.Bermuda’s team, made up of Mayho, Tre-Shun Correia, Vashon Cann, Mark Godfrey, Daelan Richardson, and Deshi Smith in the boy’s division, and Arnold and Molly Pilgrim in the girls division, head to Puerto Rico today in pursuit of podium finishes. It will be the last junior event for Mayho and Correira who are competing in the Boys (17-18 years) division.“I have high expectations for both myself and both teams heading into Puerto Rico,” said Mayho.“For myself I hope to do well in the time trial and hopefully get a podium place while also seeing my team-mates perform to their best.“Mark (Godfrey) should do well in the road race as the team will be looking to get him in a position to win, so overall I’m hoping that everyone performs to the best of their ability.“I’m a senior rider in the team and it feels good to have the added responsibility of helping out all the youngers guys, so hopefully we all do well at the Championships.”The championships will be decided over two events in each category; an individual time trial and a road race with distances varying by category.Cann, Correia and Mayho are returning for their third year and will race in the Junior Boys (17-18 years-old) group.Godfrey raced last summer for the first time and came home with the silver medal in the Juvenile Boys (15-16 years) division.Joining him in the younger group will be Bermuda Institute students Richardson and Smith. Both Arnold and Pilgrim will have their first experience at this level of cycling and will take part in the single category for Junior Girls (15-18 years), a tough proposition that Arnold is accepting with open arms.“I’m really excited to be involved and get the experience under my belt, obviously I don’t know who I will be competing against but I just hope it all goes well and I can put in some good rides,” said Arnold.“Going away is always a good thing, especially representing your country so I want to stay within myself and remain in the pack until the final stages and see where things go from there.”Since the start of the competition in 2006, Bermuda’s team have brought home four medals: Hayley Evans won the bronze in the 2008 time trial in Curacao, Sophie Adams also captured bronze in 2008 in the road race, while Izabella Arnold scooped a bronze in the 2009 time trial in Bermuda to go along with Godfrey’s silver medal in last year’s road race in Aruba.
