Mayo recovers from crash to snatch road race victory

Dominique Mayho recovered from a crash midway through the Male ‘A’ Division race to pull off an unlikely win in the first event of Bermuda Bicycle Association’s (BBA) Road Race series at Southside on Sunday.An early breakaway consisting of Mayho, Darren Glasford and Mark Hatherly tried unsuccessfully to fend off the pursuers and were caught by Mayho’s Madison team-matre Neil Lupsic, who attacked from the front.But disaster struck for Mayho when his front tyre hit the rear of Lupsic’s, sending the Bermuda Junior Athlete of the year to the tarmac and scrambling back to his feet in pursuit of his bike.From then on, however, it was all Mayho as he managed to get back onto the main field and position himself for an impressivec last-lap surge that saw him gain an insurmountable lead with a well-timed attack to sprint to victory.Emerging from the field of chasers was Shannon Lawrence, who claimed the sprint for second. A sporting Hatherly, who had been one of the main protagonists of the day, helped Mayho along, providing him water after he had lost his during his crash.Birthday boy Lupsic and defending Road Race champion Darren Glasford rounded out the top five.Fifteen year-old Justin Ferreira placed sixth in his first “Male A” race.In the ‘B’ Division, defending series champion Stephen Tomlinson was nipped at the line by winner Ricky Smith. It was Tomlinson’s last race in Bermuda.Daren Dowling, Marcellino Ferreira and BBA president Peter Dunne rounded out the top five in a crash-filled race.The Adult ‘C’ Division was dominated by the father-son tandem of Thomas Godfrey (son) and Nigel Godfrey (father).Road race rookie Kareem Johnson grabbed a podium spot in his first event, followed by beginner Romar Douglas and yet another rookie to the series, Chris Smith.Women’s racing also provided excitement as beginner Joanna Shillington managed to hold on to victory over young Gabby Arnold and Laurie Orchard, who is returning to the sport after a long hiatus. The top five was completed by Jeana Jones and Wenda Roberts.The Junior ‘A’ race was won by Kaz Godfrey over Kaleb Tannock, while the Junior ‘B’ race was won by Matthew Oliveira over Christian Oatley.Victoria Davis led the charge for third with Zion Dowling and Jessie Godfrey completing the top five.
